She’s never spoken a word to me, or to Sophia before, and all of a sudden they’re spa buddies? That can’t be good.

Italian flies by too fast, because in no time, I have to go to my English class.

I arrive before Jason and Cain, and debate sitting in a different seat. There aren't assigned seats in the class, although everyone has stayed in the same seats since the first day of class. The ones up front are all claimed, but there's a seat to the left that doesn't have seats available behind it, so I take it. It’s Monday. I’m allowed a little cowardice on Monday.

I should’ve realized that wouldn’t stop the assholes. I sink in my seat when Jason and Cain walk in, but they make a beeline for me. Cain continues to the next row, but Jason hovers beside me.

I try not to tense too obviously.

“You know Lucas,” he comments casually, as though it was the most natural thing in the world.

Shit. I seriously hope my cousin kept his word. I need him to stay out of this mess before it escalates. I don’t answer.

Jason sits on a corner of my desk and leans in to me, reaching out to touch my chin.

He lifts it so I meet his eyes. I slap his hand away. “Don’t touch me.”

He shoots me the ghost of the smile I saw Friday. “Don’t ignore me, cupcake. You wouldn’t like the consequences.”

God, I hate him.

“What’s it to you,Jace?”

He said his mother calls him that last week. I wanted to piss him off, yet he appears pleased.

“Good question, Nadia.” The way he scrutinizes me makes me uncomfortable. Everything about him makes me uncomfortable. “He was at my club this weekend. Mentioned you in passing. He seemed quite possessive.”

I’m going to murder Lucas.

Letting Jason think I’m his girlfriend or whatever could work to my advantage—maybe he’d think twice before messing with me—but I can’t bring myself to. It’s just so gross.

“He’s my cousin. We grew up together. Can you go away now?”

Jason frowns, confused. “Not from his father’s side. I would have met you before otherwise.”

He had.

Just the once.

“Do you want me to draw a family tree?” I roll my eyes.

He nods. “If you would be so kind.”

I can’t make heads or tails of what’s going on in that guy’s head.

The teacher walks in just as the bell rings. I grab a notebook out of my backpack, along with my new copy of Romeo and Juliet.

Jason tilts his head to my bag. “Isn’t that a little heavy?”

It’s filled to the brim with all my art supplies, gym clothes, and schoolbooks.

“Well, if your sycophants hadn’t ruined my locker, I wouldn’t have to cart all my books around.”

"You know, I could make your life a little easier, provided you play along.” He tilts his head.

“What, I tell you about my family and you call off the dogs?”

He shrugs. “I could, for a day or two.”
