He still felt like there was more going on, but he wouldn’t push because her face was flushed and he could tell she was embarrassed, as she’d said.

“Fuck him then,” he said. “His loss is totally my gain.”

“It is,” she said, smiling softly. “I would have never left if he didn’t do that. We wouldn’t have lasted. I know that. But I think or wonder if I would have stayed where I was and just pushed through.”

“How do you know that? That you wouldn’t have lasted?” he asked.

“I...just did,” she said. “But he didn’t have to do what he did. It was like a double shot of embarrassment. I was getting hit from every angle and I hate to say I couldn’t take it anymore. I always thought I was a strong person, but I ran.”

“You didn’t run,” he said. “But if you feel as if you did, then think of it as running to me.”

“Thanks for that, Knox. I guess we got off track. I’m only bringing this up because we are talking about me traveling. Henry was this slick guy.”

“I’m so far removed from that,” he said, cringing.

“You are. It’s a good thing. It’s what I need and want in my life. I’m not meant to be this fancy girl even if I had all these dreams of things like that as a kid. We are who we are. And when Poppy and I met with Mateo days ago, I realized that. I can be who I am and be with who I love and be just as successful as the next person. It’s about happiness and what I feel with you is the happiest I’ve ever been. I’m with a guy I love and trust and know he has my back. Those are the important things in life.”

“They are,” he murmured. Even if he was feeling like shit he still had a big secret too.

MIDDLE FINGER

Monday, Sage pulled the tray of peanut butter cookies out of her oven and slid another batch in, then set the timer.

After traveling all last week and getting home on Friday, Poppy texted her yesterday and told her to take Monday off to just chill.

She wasn’t going to argue in the least about it.

She was still riding that high of a job well done even though it was nowhere near completion.

Poppy had sent her over a few of the designs she’d been working on and they looked stunning. She was jealous that she’d never get one since they were one of a kind. The contracts had been signed when they were there. She wished they were products they could sell but knew that there were workarounds to make similar items too.

Rose was working on some pieces also and hoped to have hers done within the week.

Kate had posted pictures on social media while they were there and then again this weekend hinting toward a great collaboration on the horizon. Mateo was all for it and had his daughter stop over for a few shots too.

Two supermodels boosting both businesses. Couldn’t ask for anything more.

Both businesses were getting a massive bump from this and Kate had said it might open more doors for her to do that in the future. That Sage’s previous employers liked what was done and they might market that as a new service.

Figures, she thought to herself. Something she came up with but she’d never get the credit for it.

Then she wondered why she needed that pat on the back from the place that all but kicked her to the curb.

Though by Kate posting all that she was, it was like a middle finger to those who doubted her ability at her last job.

While that tray of cookies cooled, she scooped out more for another and started to whistle while she worked.

She’d spent the weekend at Knox’s and they had a great time together.

It’d been hard for her to tell him about Henry. Especially since she didn’t give the complete story.

After she thought more of it, she didn’t need to tell him all of it. It didn’t make a difference.

She told the facts. She dated a guy at work.

Many thought she got her promotion because of Henry.
