Maybe, so don’t lose.

WADE

We won’t.

When I place the phone on the table to undress, it starts ringing. I pick it up with a smile, but it’s not Wade, as I expected. It’s Karl.

I take a deep breath before answering. “Hey. What’s up?”

“Hi, Rox. How are you?”

I sit down on one of the dining chairs and twirl a blonde curl around my finger. “Good. You?”

“I’m all right. Listen, I wanted to see if you were free to hang out—just the two of us, like old times. Between Kim and Wade, we didn’t really have time to catch up.”

My heart begins to cartwheel in my chest. “Sure! That’d be great.”

“I’m free on Monday evening.”

I grin. “Perfect. Actually, I was going to call you. Wade got me tickets to his game on Monday. I thought we could go together.”

“Oh, em. I’d rather go somewhere else. A roaring stadium isn’t the best place to talk,” he jokes.

“Oh, come on. It’ll be fun. I got VIP tickets and everything.”

“You hate football, Rox. Let’s go grab a drink instead.” His tone is harsh and commanding.

My lips tighten. “Fine, but it’ll have to be another night, then.”

“Really?” he snorts. “Can’t you go to another game?”

I bite my lip. It sounds like he really wants to see me. And I want to see him, especially without Kim around. But I promised Wade, and honestly, I’m kind of excited to go. “No, I said I’d go to this one. When are you free next week?”

A loud, breathy sound comes through the phone. “That’s my only night off. Are you really going to choose him over me?”

Is he serious right now? “I’m not choosing anyone, Karl. I’m dating Wade, so yes, I’m going to his game. If you don’t want to join me, then we’ll just see each other another time.”

“He’s a footballer, Rox. Wake up! This is not going to last long. Look at his dating history. No serious relationships, and he’s only ever seen with models and actresses. You don’t stand a chance.”

I swallow hard and mumble, “Whoa.” I didn’t think he could hurt me more than when he showed up with Kim, but this is much worse. He knows all about my insecurities. Using them to hurt me is a low blow.

“You’re a bastard, Karl. And you know what? I am choosing Wade,” I snap before hanging up the phone, tears burning at the corners of my eyes.

Right now, I’m disgusted by Karl and the fact I even had a crush on him. At this point, I don’t even know how we could have ever been friends.

Shopping on Oxford Street on a Saturday afternoon is probably the worst idea ever. But we can’t help ourselves. Think, hordes of tourists, families with bored children, and shopping addicts like us all packed on one busy street. At least it’s not raining today.

“Every time, we say ‘never again,’ yet here we are,” Lina grumbles, shaking her head as we fight our way out of Selfridges.

“I know. But coming here after work is no better. And I always feel like there are more choices on the weekend.”

We found some cute stuff during today’s shopping spree, and I lost some weight in the process. What else could a girl ask for?

“So, when are you seeing Wade again?” She glances at me with a smirk.

“Oh! I forgot to ask you. Do you want to go to a football game on Monday? Wade got me tickets.”

“You hate football.” She adjusts her glasses as if trying to make sure it’s really me talking. “Something like, ‘All they do is run after a ball, and whenever the players collide, they squirm on the floor like they’ve been shot.’”
