"What is it?" Sandra blinked, as though she was completely oblivious.

"You are incredibly rude. Do you know that, or are you just acting dumb?"

Sandra gave her a weird look, and then she shook her head and went on her way.

"I'll see you later, Hannah," she said, but I didn't respond. The door was shut, and Mandy turned to me and exclaimed once again.

"Wow! You are having the time of your life here. Fucking your boss and associating with vipers."

"Shut up," I said.

"But you see it though, right?" she asked. "You noted how condescending she was to you? I hope you've not brought her close thinking she was your friend."

Yes, I had noticed these things, but she also hadn’t been so outrightly rude to me ever before, and I couldn't help but narrow my eyes at Mandy.

“You seem to bring out the very worst in people. She's never been that way to me before.”

“Hm, hm,” she said. “Of course, you’d say that, and of course, you wouldn’t see it. Well, whatever was shown here, you better pay attention and be careful with her; she obviously wants you fired, and I cannot for the life of me wonder why.”

“She doesn't want me fired,” I replied. “Maybe she's just surprised that my boss hasn't fired me yet. He's fired everyone else. And well, she does have a point.”

Her mouth dropped as she stared at me, and truly, I couldn't stand her presence here either. I wanted her gone.

“What?”

“You really think it's because you two are dating that he's tolerated you this long even with all the mistakes you've made, even the life-threatening one?”

“Hey, keep it down. And I'm not delusional. If we didn't have the attraction we had from the beginning, yes, I believe he would have been far less patient. It doesn't mean I'm not good at my job, and it doesn't mean I'm lacking either. The point is that I'm getting better.”

“Hm, hm,” she said and rose up. Then she came over to my desk with her hand stretched out.

“My spa payment. Hand over the card and the added hundred.”

“Here’s your gift card,” I said and brought out the envelope. “And I'll Cash App the rest to you.”

Smiling, she lowered her hand and gave me a kiss on the cheek, and just then, the door was pushed open.

Chapter Forty-Six

Guy

Once again, the scene from the bar instantly flashed before my mind. Her friend leaning down, sucking on her boobs. It had been a turn-on, but now I was no longer impressed. That was the thing I had noticed about us over the past week. Suddenly, and after my decision to pull down a little bit more walls between us, to walk with her instead of away from her, I had become quite possessive.

It started with George and how he always lingered at her desk. She was always smiling at him, happy to see him, and I truly couldn't tell if it was all genuine or if she was being polite. However, she was never quite that way with me. I understood that. I was her boss, but we were intimate now, yet there was still a very visible line that she refused to allow herself to cross, even when we were alone together.

Her friend instantly got up, and not wanting to make this into a whole situation, I simply sent her a nod and returned to my office. There, I took my seat and continued with making the rest of the needed preparations before we had to leave. Afterward, and seeing that it was ten minutes to the time, I placed a call.

“We’re ready, sir,” she stopped and I grabbed my jacket and rose to my feet. I thought about using the helicopter rover to the airport, but once again, I didn’t want to attract undue attention. Dealing with the city traffic at this time, however, was especially aggravating.

She waited at her desk, and once again, as I watched her as was the case now, my heart shifted in my chest.

“Ready?” I asked, and she nodded. We walked out together, with a duffel bag in her hand, but I was a bit uncomfortable about that.

“You shouldn’t be holding that,” I told her as soon as we reached the elevator. She shut her eyes and lowered her head, and I understood that she had to make the last-minute arrangements since she hadn't exactly been scheduled to fly with me.

I understood then that I was being too unfair, and as I had been teaching myself to be, I softened slightly.

“It’s alright,” I told her. “Next time, don’t bother bringing anything. I’m sure you can get whatever we need in the city. Or just ensure it’s on the plane or with Raul before we head down.”
