He remained silent, and then he spoke.

“Where are your keys then?”

I instantly came back to reality and scrambled to my feet. His eyes remained on my breasts, and when I realized this and also recalled that we weren’t in a private area but in a hall where any of my neighbors could walk by, I immediately made myself decent.

“Uh…I really don't think we should go in,” I said. “Maybe we can go somewhere else. There are a lot of hotels in this area. Or we could go somewhere more expensive. I'll pay for it, don't worry.”

At my rambling, he cocked his head at me, and I felt so small.

I wracked my head then and waited for his inquiry.

“Why don’t you want me to go into your apartment?” he asked. “You've been in mine. Is there something sacred in there that I'm not allowed to see?”

This was the moment of truth, the moment that nothing would rescue me from or that I would never be able to recover from in my lifetime if he truly decided not to heed my advice to go to a hotel.

I lifted my gaze then to see the judgment in his eyes and reaction.

“It's uh… it's been a very hectic week for me. Probably the most hectic of my life so far.”

“And?” he asked.

“And um… it's a mess. I was supposed to clean it yesterday and then… went to Mandy's and then this happened, and it just all went out of control. I really can't have you in there. I'm so sorry. I'd rather do this anywhere else, even in your car. Here even.”

“Is it really that bad?” he asked, and I nodded absolutely dejected.

“Now I'm curious all the more,” he said and then held out his hand. “The keys,” he demanded, and I truly couldn't believe my ears.

Chapter Forty-Two

Guy

She had to be the most comical person that I had ever met. Truly, I didn’t know whether to be offended or amused, or maybe I was a little bit of both.

As I stared down at her gorgeous, beautiful self, for the very first time in a long while, all I wanted to do was laugh out loud. She wasn’t manipulative because if she was, then she would have been able to carry this out flawlessly. Instead, she was a complete mess caught in the web of her own lies more often than she could have anticipated.

I knew she was mortified, however, I felt as though this was the key to pulling down some of the walls between us. As I stared down, I realized that was exactly what I wanted. Desire was something that had driven me relentlessly all my life. I couldn't fathom not getting what I wanted, therefore, all my life, I had pursued whatever had taken root in my life and gotten it. Not until her did I realize how bored I had been getting. I had all I wanted and didn’t quite have the desire for more, yet here she was. She was new, and she made my chest warm and my heart race, so I decided to try to get to know her a little better than our intended one-night stand. Yes, she was a distraction, but I had lived well enough to know that in distractions, very precious gems could be found.

I was willing and committed to taking this all the way.

“The key,” I asked, and she looked a bit as though she would rather throw herself down from the third floor we were on. Eventually, though, and after it dawned on her that I wasn’t going to budge on this for whatever reason, she got up and rummaged through her bag for it. However, she didn’t hand it over. Instead, she inserted the key herself but then she left the handle after she had turned it open and turned to me. She looked into my eyes, and her expression softened, making my heart almost melt. I knew then, without a shadow of a doubt, that I was falling in love with this woman.

“I’ll pay for our hotel,” she said, and I shook my head.

She pouted, and it took all of me to keep from laughing out loud. Then, with a slight frown that made her look even more impossibly beautiful than I could describe, she pushed the door open and turned on the light.

It was a studio. An incredibly small one, I might add, and she was right. All over was food spread around in the tiny kitchen, clothes across her bed, and even on the floor. In the corner was a trash pile too, and for a few seconds, I was stunned.

I wasn’t a stranger to mess and clutter, but I detested it, and I had been rich long enough to hire the help needed to ensure that I never walked into anything less than a sparkling clean apartment. This, however, was an experience. I turned around to her and could see her head lowered and just how dejected she felt. I couldn't help but sigh.

“We’ll go to my apartment,” I said, choosing to have some empathy for her. “And I’ll send a housekeeper over here tomorrow to help you out.”

“No, no,” she refused. “I can handle it. It’s not really a lot, it just looked this way because the apartment is so small.”

“Hannah,” I called. “Small or not, this is a lot.”

“Alright,” she replied, refusing to argue anymore since she couldn’t wait to get out of there. “Let's go then, please?”

It was the correct thing to do, however, I couldn’t wait. What she had said she wanted to do with me earlier was all that was going through my mind and my libido. And given that when I looked at all the clothes on the bed all I could think about was that standing before me was a beautiful woman begging for a lick even in this mess. I couldn’t understand why we couldn’t get our time together started. And so, I shook my head in refusal and headed in.
