“Guy?” he asked, and I realized what I just said.

“Shit!” I swore and quickly corrected myself. “I mean, uh... Mr. Templeton, the managing partner.”

His eyebrows shot up so high they almost reached his hairline at this information, and in a way, I was almost sure that I knew why.

“Guess we won't be seeing much of you for long,” he said, and my heart instantly sank.

“Anyway to prevent that?” I asked, and he looked at me in surprise.

“Well, asking that question might be the best way to prevent that. I'm sure I can come up with some answers for you, so come see me later on?”

“Okay,” I replied, not knowing who he was. But just as we stopped suddenly in a reading area, he pulled out his business card and handed it over.

“Jeremiah Faust, Associate.”

“Thank you,” I said, and then, with his hand reassuringly on my shoulder, he pointed me toward the direction of a man seated along with piles of books and files by his side.

“That's George. Redhead, glasses, patchy mustache.” Nodding, I thanked him and headed over.

I approached silently but quickly, and just before I could speak, he grumbled at my presence.

“What do you want?” I was frozen in place, wondering why everyone in this firm seemed so upset all the time.

“Uh… the boss- the managing partner needs you,” I said, and instantly his gaze snapped to me. I could see the surprise on his face at my presence, but he didn't even bother asking who I was.

“Why can't he reach my phone? Didn't-“

He searched for it amongst the pile all over his table, and when he eventually found it, met the black screen.

“Freaking crap!” He scrambled to his feet and sprinted so fast from the library that I was almost sure that I was covered in dust from his speed.

I guess I understood now what Guy meant about how important speed was with the people he worked closely with, and so determined to survive this, I turned around and hurried after him as well.

With his focus on George in the meantime, I plopped into my chair and felt the pain and exhaustion settle over my body like lead. I had thus far barely been at work for two hours, yet it felt like I had been here for a lifetime.

The screen on my desktop was still shut off, and as I looked at my dreary reflection, I truly wondered what I was going to do to fix this. Suck it up and get better? This had always been the solution for me, but for the first time, and with this particular boss, I didn't know if it was possible.

As I was wallowing, however, the door to the office was pushed open, and I instantly jumped. Seeing that it was George, I was immediately relieved, but he was so focused on the information he had in hand that he didn't pay me any attention. Not until I went over to him, and he was forced to look up.

Once again, he seemed quite startled, but he soon recovered and pushed his glasses up his nose.

“I'm Hannah,” I introduced myself and held out my hand for a shake. “I didn't introduce myself properly last time,” I said.

“Yeah,” he replied and took my hand, though all the while watching me as though I were some wild creature he had just discovered in the wild.

“I was wondering if you had some time for a quick chat?” I asked him, and he instantly shook his head in refusal.

He started to go on his way, and then he stopped, making me bump into him.

“Sorry,” I apologized, but he didn't acknowledge this.

“Are you a trained legal secretary, or is this a new area for you?”

I was reluctant to admit this, for fear that I would lose my job. I mean, during my interview, this hadn't been asked of me, so I kinda sort of felt as though it wasn’t needed.

“Legal,” I replied, and he nodded in relief.

“Okay, then. I need a quick investigation conducted about the permits Mr. Cartwright's contractor has been involved in over the past five years. I'm going to schedule the meeting now for two, so please get this done quickly; it might be quite hard to find. Do you have a guy, or do you need Guy's guy?”
