At first, I thought I was hearing things. There was no reason for anyone to be at my door before I woke up. Whiskee stirred against me, pressing her thick ass against my dick.

“Baby, get the door.” Her groggy voice was sexy as hell. I didn’t think there was anything about this woman I wouldn’t find attractive.

My eyes slowly opened and looked out of the window. It looked like the sun hadn’t been too long started to rise. Grabbing my phone, I ignored the doorbell and looked at my security camera. At the sight of my father, I groaned. If he was here this early in the morning, it wasn’t for something good. After rubbing and squeezing Whiskee’s ass and giving her a kiss on the side of her mouth, I got out of bed to see what this man wanted.

“Aight, aight, I’m coming!” I yelled when he continued to ring the doorbell, as if he could hear me.

The shit was so incessant I was annoyed by the time I made it to the front door and swung it open. My frown slowly relaxed when he extended a cup of coffee in my direction.

“I know it’s early, but I wanted to see you before my flight.”

“Where you goin’?” I asked, accepting the coffee.

“New York. Might have a new connect out that way.”

My head bobbed as I sipped the coffee. “How long you gon’ be gone, and who going witchu?”

“Just today. I’ll be back tomorrow. And I’m taking Denim and two guards.”

“Cool.”

He loosened his tie, looking past me into the house. “Whiskee here?”

I wasn’t sure why he was asking me that. He’d never asked before. Motioning for him to step back, I stepped onto the porch and closed the door behind me.

“Why do you ask?”

“I just wanna make sure you don’t blur the lines too much and forget the whole point of this. It’s in your best interest if you don’t get attached to the girl.”

“Like you made sure you didn’t get attached to my mama?” His eyes rolled toward the sky. I didn’t bother to give him time to respond. It didn’t matter anyway. “Not that it’s any of your business, but what makes you think I have?”

“Carlos called me last night and told me things were real between you two.”

I chuckled as I took a sip of my coffee.

This nigga.

“What me and Whiskee do ain’t got shit to do with either one of y’all. I’on know why he even called to tell you that.”

Pops sucked his teeth, ignoring my frustration like he normally did. “I think he did it because he thought it would gain him some brownie points. Regardless, you need to slow down with that. How you think she gon’ feel when you kill her brother? That’s the whole point of this, son.”

“Nah, the point of this was to bring them into the family by marriage, and that’s what we’re doing.”

“I told you in order for this to work, you’d have to kill him and take over.”

“No, you said in order for this to work, I had to marry her. You said you wanted him dead, and that was only if we felt like he couldn’t handle business. I never agreed to that, just to marrying her to bring them in.”

He chuckled before drinking his coffee. “There you go again… saying things that suggest you think you have a choice.” His smile dropped. “I’m not asking you anything; I’m telling you that you’re going to kill him. Now if you can lay next to her knowing you killed her brother, go forth. If not, cut all this lovey dovey shit out and focus on the business.” As he turned, he added, “I’ll call you when I get back home.”

There was no point in me trying to go back and forth with him, so as frustrated as I was, I went back inside and finished my coffee before brushing my teeth and handling my hygiene in the guest bathroom that was nearest the kitchen.

Whiskee was in the gym working out, which didn’t surprise me. Every step that I took toward her made my heart ache more and more. I didn’t want to be the reason she lost another person that was close to her. If something happened to Carlos, she’d feel alone in this world. I didn’t know how I was going to make this work for all of us, but I’d have to figure something out—soon.

After our workout, we showered together, then got back in bed. I wasn’t used to this slow way of living, but I could appreciate the rest. She had a specific post-workout smoothie that she wanted, so I ordered us two. I didn’t realize how quiet I’d been until she called me out on it and asked me was I okay.

“Yeah, just got some shit on my mind.”

“Does it have to do with that early visit?”
