Chapter Thirty-Six

THE MALE AQUARIAN MAY BE A NON-CONFORMIST

Ryn

“Damn it, Pasha! Will you just listen to me?” I say, swimming after her.

“No. It’s been a long day, and I’m ready to go home.”

I grab her arm so she’s forced to look my way. “Then come home with me.”

“I’m not doing that anymore.” She shakes her head.

“Why not?” My features tighten. I haven’t been the best boyfriend, but I’m going to change that.

“I’m done being your bed warmer. I want to find true love.”

“Well, it’s staring you right in the face,” I say.

Her jaw drops open a little before she narrows her eyes. “Don’t play with me.”

I rub my hands over the back of her shoulder. I’ve never told anyone this before, but I don’t want to lose Pasha, and I need her to know how serious I am. “I love you. I always have,” I say, holding eye contact.

“But...”

“There’s no but. I’m sorry I haven’t always shown how I feel, but I’m going to be better.”

“You’re a royal who will marry another royal. There’s no point in us dating.”

“Times are changing and that’s no longer true. I’ll marry whoever I like, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves. We never truly gave our relationship a chance.”

“You’re not giving me a good enough reason.”

My heart sinks, but I’m not ready to give up yet. “I never wanted to marry Maris or any other royal. Now I realise I won’t be rushing into a long-term commitment. I want to spend my days with you and see where it goes.”

“I won’t sneak around with you or meet up late for a rendezvous.”

“That’s not what I’m asking. I want you to be my girlfriend, and I’ll shout it from the top of the clam if it will get me what I want.” A faint smile appears on her face and it gives me a sliver of hope. “Just give me a chance. I’m not promising I won’t make any mistakes, but I will try my hardest to be the right merman for you.”

“You have one chance.” She holds her finger up, but I’m already going in for the kiss. I capture her lips with mine and pull her into an embrace.

“No more sneaking around.”

“No.” I take her hand and lead her towards my home.

“I thought we agreed on no late hook-ups.”

“You might change your mind on that, but first, we have somewhere to be.”

“Where are we going?”

“You’ll see.”

I lead her to the royal quarters and into the main room of my home. My sister and mother are sitting together, making pearl necklaces.

“Nerida. Mother. I’d like you to formally meet Pasha. My girlfriend.” They both look up but neither smile.

“Well, I’ll eat my shellfish. I didn’t think you had the balls to bring her in here,” Nerida says. A strangled laugh cackles in the back of her throat.
