A beautiful green-tailed mermaid helps Ryn push back a few of Neptune’s guards. I blink a few times as the familiarity of his friend comes into focus. “Is that Owen?” I ask.

“Apparently, if you drink from the jug and kiss a mermaid on the lips, you turn into a merman,” Kasper says.

My eyes widen. “I didn’t know that was possible.”

“We will tell you all about it once we’ve taken back the city. I’m going to help Ryn and my brother. Stay close.”

I start to follow, but a scream from Pasha makes me change direction. Neptune has a dagger to her throat, and my father is staggering forward. “Don’t come any closer,” Neptune says.

“You wouldn’t kill your own daughter,” my father says.

“No, but neither will you.” They seem to be using her as a shield to divide them.

Pasha bites down on her father’s arm, and he lets go. She swims over to my dad, and Neptune grabs for me. I swing the jug, which hits him in the chest, pushing him back.

“Give me the jug,” Neptune says.

“No. It’s time for you to leave.”

He reaches for me again. Pasha and my dad move towards him as I struggle away. Pasha dips her hand into the jug and covers Neptune’s mouth with it. “Kiss him on the lips!” she shouts to me.

“Why would I kiss your dad?” I frown.

“There’s no time to waste, just do it,” Pasha says as her dad struggles. I trust she knows what she’s doing, so I let Neptune have it and plant a big smooch on his lips. I never thought I’d be doing this to a guy twice my age, but it’s for a good cause.

Neptune starts to choke before he glows the blue colour of the liquid from the jug.

Did Pasha help me kill her father? I only have to wait a little longer to find out the truth. Neptune’s tail turns into legs, and he can no longer breathe underwater. He’s no longer a merman. He’s a human.

Pasha grabs an oxygen mask and helps Neptune put it on. He can no longer speak underwater or do anything else mer can do. He starts to swim up towards the surface.

“How did you know that would work?”

“I didn’t, but when I kissed Owen, he turned into a merman. I don’t know if it was my desire or just what happens after drinking from the jug, but it was worth a shot.”

“What if you’d transformed into a human?”

“I didn’t drink from the jug.”

“So, what now? We can’t kiss all our enemies.”

“I don’t think we’ll have to,” my dad says before shouting, “Mer of Atlantis! Neptune is no longer part of the mer community! Now settle down or get out.” His command sends ripples through the water like the true king he is, and the merfolk fall silent. It’s almost peaceful.
