Chapter Thirty-Three

KISSING AN AQUARIUS IS LIKE NO OTHER STAR SIGN

Pasha

“He seems to really like you,” Owen says, pointing to the water.

“Ryn’s a complex guy,” I reply.

“I hope it works out for you.”

“Thank you. You must be a special guy too. Did your brother and Maris manage to heal you?”

“Yes. I drank from the Aquarius jug and I feel like a new man.”

“That’s incredible!” I’m pleased for all three of them. I never doubted Maris would make a good queen, but this is proof she’s capable of great things.

“Is it time to pucker up?” Owen asks, rubbing his hands together.

I can’t help but laugh. “Come here, cheeky human.”

“You’ll be the first woman I’ve kissed in years. Well, other than Maris.”

My smile wavers. “Is there something between you and Maris?” I don’t want to hurt her again. I struggled with my feelings for Ryn from the start, and I won’t kiss any of Maris’s other love interests.

“Only in the way there is between you two. She’s like a sister to me, and maybe one day, she might be my sister-in-law.”

My face brightens. “Did she say I’m like a sister to her?”

“Yes. She loves you, Pasha. Even if you’ve fallen out at the moment.”

“We’re still friends.” I run my hand over my hair. “It’s just complicated.”

“You seem to like that word.”

“I’ve never been one to take the easy route.”

“You’ll get there. I have faith.”

“We’re going to fix Atlantis. Mermaids and humans together.” I step towards him, ready to give him the gift I have to offer.

The sea splashes over our feet, and I’m ready to return home. I lean in and press my lips to Owen’s. The touch is soft and warm. His jaw dances across mine as his tongue explores my mouth. This wasn’t supposed to be a passionate kiss, but it’s full of need. He kisses across my cheek and nibbles my neck until he relaxes his forehead against mine. “Wow. I’ve been missing out. Do all humans kiss like that?”

“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have taken advantage.”

“Ryn and I aren’t officially together, but I’m not giving up on him yet,” I say.

“I feel strange,” Owen says.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings.”

“No, that’s not it.” It happens quickly, but he slips down my body and flops into the sea. Where his legs once were, there is now a tail.

My mouth falls open in shock. “You’re a merman.”

Owen looks panicked as he scopes the beach for people. “We’d better go.” He uses his arms to pull himself deeper into the sea, and I follow. Once the water comes up to my knees, I drop into the sea and change form.

I take hold of Owen’s hand and we catch up to the others.
