“Aw, that’s sweet,” I say.

“What about you, Maris? What are you going to do?”

“I’m going to save Atlantis,” I say, feeling empowered by that idea.

“You’re not going to marry Ryn, are you?” Kasper asks.

“No. I will only marry for love.”

“Good for you,” Owen says.

“Do you want us to help you save Atlantis?” Kasper asks.

“I have the jug and some merfolk on my side. My species will not accept you, and I don’t want to complicate things. I think you should go back to England and I’ll lead my folk.”

“You’ve got this, Maris,” Owen says. He hugs me and kisses my cheek. “I’ll give you two some space to say goodbye. Thanks for everything.” I squeeze him tightly and we say our farewells.

“So,” Kasper starts. “I’m going to miss you.”

“Me too. My favourite human.”

“I love you. I mean that.” He leans in and captures my lips. We kiss with passion, but it also feels like a goodbye.

“I love you too,” I say when we break apart.

“Good luck with Atlantis.”

“Thanks. I’m going to take back what’s mine, just like Owen has.”

We kiss and cuddle a few more times. I’ve enjoyed our mission, but I’m ready to return home. I’d love to see the guys building their lives back up, but I’m a mermaid, and returning to the sea is what’s right.
