Chapter Twenty-Nine

AQUARIANS ARE MOST HAPPY WHEN THEY HELP OTHERS

Maris

The campfire glows amber as the dark sky begins to twinkle with stars. I feel at peace as I sit between my two favourite men.

“So, what happens now?” Owen asks.

“We wish to the Greek gods that we’re in the right place,” I say.

“And usually there’s some kissing.”

“Well, don’t let me stop you,” Owen says, resting back on his hands and looking up at the stars.

It’s a little awkward at first, but we soon get into it. About an hour later, we both roll onto our backs. “My jaw’s aching, and I don’t think that’s working.”

“Charming,” Kasper says, laughing.

“There you go, brother. You’ve blown it,” Owen jokes.

“We’re obviously missing something,” I say.

“Our make-out sessions have been intense lately.” Kasper winks.

“I don’t think that’s it,” Owen says.

“Come on, then. You’ve not been there to solve any of the other clues, but let’s hear you steamroll in and claim this one.”

“Actually, I’m not claiming anything, but I’m willing to admit I love Maris. Obviously in a sisterly way, but nonetheless, Maris, I think you’re incredible for everything you’ve done, and I love you.”

“Aw, thank you, Owen. I love you too.”

“Should we have a little kiss now?” he asks, making me chuckle. He’s so sweet, and I’m honoured to be thought of so highly.

“Let’s do it.” I sit up and he does the same. He leans in to kiss my cheek, but I turn my head. Close friends can kiss on the lips and it can still be platonic. We share a quick peck, and my heart swells. I never thought I’d love a human in any way, never mind two, but these guys mean everything to me.

“That was cute,” Kasper says.

“Yes, it was. Owen might be my favourite now,” I joke.

“You wound me. I’m not sure my heart can take that.” Kasper clutches his chest.

“But I still love your friendship too,” I say.

“Burn,” Owen says.

“Oh, shut it,” Kasper says, laughing. “I love you also, Maris, but it isn’t like a sibling.”

Owen laughs loudly, making himself cough. Kasper and I freeze.

“Maris is beautiful and kind. She deserves more than a half-assed love confession,” Owen says.

“Thanks, Owen, and one day, I’ll get one from my future husband.”

“He’s one lucky merman.” We’re lost in our conversation when Kasper starts to shush us. “What?” Owen asks.

“Look over there.” He points to the sky where a cluster of stars has started to get brighter. The outline of a mermaid appears made out of something like the northern lights, and she comes to life like a cartoon. We’re all mesmerised by her.
