Thinking back to the clue, I ask, “Do you think the moon shines brightest at a certain time?” We swim towards the land, keeping out of sight.

“I don’t have a clue, but we’ll find out.”

* * *

“What is a supermoon?” I ask.

“It’s the answer to your question. The moon is brightest when it’s closest to Earth,” Owen says, and Kasper leans over his shoulder to read the same book.

“Okay, so when’s the next one?” Goosebumps pucker over my skin. We are so close to having the whole jug.

They both flick through books to try and find the answer. “It seems to be different every year. We need to find a computer so we can access the internet,” Kasper says.

“Shall we go to the library?” I ask.

“Yes. Let me grab my jacket.”

“Me too,” Owen says, making his brother pause.

“You should stay here,” Kasper says.

“I’m feeling fine and I want to come.” Owen glares at his brother.

Kasper hesitates, ready to argue, but then he shakes his head. “Okay.”

Owen’s smile beams across his face. For the first time since we met, he looks determined to succeed. Once we’re ready, we walk to the library and find a computer.

“I can’t believe our luck,” I say.

“What does it say?” Owen asks.

“The next supermoon is tonight.” I clap giddily.

Kasper holds his cheeks, pulling his skin back towards his scalp. “It’s almost over.” A sob leaves his lips, and the three of us huddle. Emotions are running high, and it gives me a buzz. I’m so happy to have met these two amazing humans, and I feel the sentimental bond deepen between us.

“I want to come with you guys,” Owen says.

“It usually gets romantic between us when we see the stars,” Kasper says, trying to lighten the mood as well as warn his brother.

“I knew there was something between you two.” Owen smiles.

“You should still come tonight. It will be nice to have you and the jug ready to go,” I say.

“Where are you going? Do you have a location?”

“There was no location mentioned in the clue, but I’m guessing we need to be close to the ocean,” Kasper says.

“And the land,” I add.

“And the stars,” Kasper says with a smile. Our eyes meet, and I smile.

“Maybe love is in the air,” Owen says, breaking the trance we’re in.

“We’ve only known each other a few weeks,” Kasper says.

“It couldn’t be love,” I say, shaking my head.

I’ve already rushed my feelings with one man. I won’t make the same mistake again. Kasper is nothing like Ryn, and he seems to only have eyes for me, but we don’t know each other well enough for it to be love, right? Plus, I’m a mermaid and he’s a human. We live in completely different surroundings. My dad won’t accept him, and I don’t want to leave Atlantis.

I shake my head. “No. It can’t be love.”
