Chapter Twenty-Two

BIRTHDATES BETWEEN JANUARY 20TH AND FEBRUARY 18TH ARE UNDER AQUARIUS

Ryn

I’m not willing to throw my heritage away for the rebellion. I need to get out of here fast. After the shower, I dress quickly. Pasha seems to be on board with leaving, but her dad being here changes things.

“Are you ready?” I ask.

“Yes. Let’s go for that walk,” she says, nodding.

She greets a few mer on our way outside, and I watch her for hesitation. Will she leave with me, or will she change her mind? I’ve always known she was unhappy with her future, and I would be if we’d been dealt opposite hands. If it was my dad leading these people, would I stand by his side?

Once we reach the back garden wall, we stand, watching the ocean. “Are you sure you want to do this?”

“Are you serious? I may not agree with everything in Atlantis, but I haven’t gone insane,” she whispers.

“On three I’ll give you a leg up?”

“Yes.”

“One, two…”

“Neptune, we have a problem,” someone shouts, stopping us in our tracks.

We both turn to see where the voice is coming from. “Do you want to find out what’s going on?” I ask.

“Do you think it could concern Maris?” A worry line appears on her forehead.

I rub my arm. “I don’t know, but it might be useful to find out what they know.”

Pasha nods. “Okay. Let’s delay.”

“I think that’s wise.”

We head inside to join the others. “It’s Rob and Landon. They’ve been taken by the king’s guard.”

“Shit,” Neptune says, rubbing his head. “Did you see where they went?”

“They were following the princess and she went into the water. I think they’ve all gone to Atlantis.”

“Maris has gone home?” I ask.

I can go home. My smile is uncontrollable as relief fills my body.

“Yes, and the human too.”

“Oh, no. This can’t be good,” Pasha says, unable to hide her concern.

Neptune mistakes her words. “Indeed, it can’t, but Rob and Landon are loyal. They won’t tell the king anything.”

“What are we going to do?” someone asks.

“I could go talk to the king,” I say. At least that would get me out of here, and I could ask for the men to be freed.

“What an excellent plan. Now we have you two on our side, we can use it to our advantage.”

“Sure,” I say. Pasha’s eyes are wide, and I kiss her cheek, trying to get her to calm down. “Relax,” I whisper.
