Chapter Thirteen

AQUARIUS IS AN AIR ELEMENT

Maris

“Damn, we’re in the northern hemisphere,” Kasper says.

“Aquarius is seen in the southern hemisphere at this time of year,” I reply.

“We travelled all the way back to Haiti for nothing.” He scrunches up the page in the textbook.

“Hey, what has that library book ever done to you?” I pull it away from him.

“I’m sorry. I’m just frustrated.”

“I know you are.” I touch his hand, and he smiles at me.

There’s something between us I’ve never felt before, not even with Ryn. When he looks at me like that, I get an urge to kiss him. I lick my lips, and I can see him looking. His smile wavers and his mouth copies the actions I just made. I’m mesmerised.

“The café is closing soon. You need to pack up your things,” says the owner.

“Thanks,” I say.

Kasper took me to the Zodiac café when the books we got from Pasha didn’t hold all the answers we needed. Once we’re outside, Kasper takes hold of my hand to walk me back to his house. “We need to cross the Caribbean Sea. Do you think we can do that?”

“You mean swim?” I ask.

“Yes. My boat is gone, and I don’t have the money for a plane ticket. Do you think we can get there in a day or so?”

“I can call on some of my friends from the sea.”

“Thank you.” He kisses my cheek, and I turn my head so our lips are almost touching. “We shouldn’t,” he says, closing his eyes like he’s in pain.

“Why not?” I ask.

“I’m not good enough for you.”

“Isn’t that for me to decide? Plus, it’s just a kiss.” I don’t understand why he thinks we shouldn’t do this.

“You’re sweet, beautiful, and innocent.”

“Why does that sound like a bad thing?” I frown.

“It’s not bad. But I’m not a guy with great moral fibre. I haven’t dated anyone since high school, and I haven’t gone without sex for more than two weeks.”

I blush. “Did she break your heart?” Humans are different from merfolk, but still as complicated.

“You’re missing the point, but yes, my high school girlfriend broke my heart.”

“That’s so sad.” My heart hurts for him. I’ve never felt true heartache, and I hope I never have to.

“She did me a favour.”

“What, by freezing your heart?” If he doesn’t date, I’m guessing he doesn’t let anyone get close.

He laughs. “By teaching me that life doesn’t always work out the way you want it to.”

“That doesn’t mean you should give up on love.”
