Chapter Six

SPRING IS THE BEST TIME TO SEE THE AQUARIUS STARS IN THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE

Pasha

“Do we have time for a quick fuck before the library?” Ryn asks while we swim towards the main city.

Usually, this would send a tingle to my core, but not today. I scrunch up my face in distaste. My best friend needs our help and I can’t let her down again.

“I don’t think we should do that anymore.” I shake my head.

He places his hands on my shoulders, making me stop swimming. “Come on, Pash. You know we’re good together.” He only seems to say the words I want to hear when we’re alone. He has no respect for me and I need to put a stop to this.

“I said no.”

His touch is soft and lingering. I can already feel myself melting into it. I shrug him off before I make a mistake.

Be strong, Pasha. “Let’s get to the library so we can swim back to Maris.”

“What’s the hurry?” He tries to touch me again, but I move out of the way. With a forceful flex of my tail, I speed towards our destination, and he follows, matching my pace.

“We’ve left Maris with a stranger we know nothing about.” I focus on the path in front of me rather than Ryn.

“He’s weak in the water. She can handle him for an hour or two.”

I narrow my eyes. Kasper seems genuine, and I wouldn’t have left Maris if I thought he would mistreat her. That doesn’t stop me wanting to check on her, though. It’s worrying that Ryn would leave her with someone who he felt might need handling. “I have confidence in Maris’s judgement if she wants to stay with Kasper. I’m happy to do my bit and help in any way I can.”

He stops again, making me turn to face him. “You can’t be serious. We shouldn’t let him go.”

“He already told us he’s only interested in the jug.”

“And you believe him?” He scowls.

“Yes, I do.” Kasper seemed desperate. I don’t know the full details of how Maris found him, but she wouldn’t approach a land creature for no reason.

“He’s a human. We shouldn’t be helping him, and we certainly shouldn’t be letting him return to land. He’s a threat to us all.”

“If you feel this way, why are you helping?”

“For Maris.” An involuntary frown creeps onto my face, but I try to recover quickly. It hurts that he chose her over me. “And for you,” he adds, but it’s too late. My priority is Maris and our friendship. I need to forget my feelings for Ryn so I can repair the damage they’ve caused. If I’m going to gain her trust again, I have to focus on her, not Ryn.

“Let’s get the book and get back to them.” I turn, batting away tears. Just because I’m choosing Maris, that doesn’t make this easy. Once my heartbeat steadies, I can think a little more clearly.

“Do you have a library card?” Ryn asks.

“No.” When I left home, I never imagined I’d be visiting the library.

“Then let’s stop by my place. We can grab the card after we make up.”

He never gives up, but I have to break the pattern. Until now, I hadn’t noticed his resilience in getting his own way. “I don’t think so.”

“Then what’s the plan? You never allow me to see your home.”

I’ve always been embarrassed by my family’s tiny cave, and I didn’t want the divide between us to be so obvious. Now it doesn’t seem so important, but I don’t want my mother questioning our relationship.

“I’m not taking you there,” I tell him.

“Then what? Are you going to steal the book?”
