She’s been talking to this human. I don’t wait for her to say anymore. Instead, I swim up into the cave and out of the water. The guy is standing, towering over my position.

“There’s more of you?” he asks.

What a stupid question. “You do know how to reproduce?” I smirk. He’s no match for me. I’m bigger, better, and more handsome.

“You must be the boyfriend, then?”

“Yes, of course I am,” I spit.

“No, he’s not,” Maris fires back, shaking her head.

“We’ll discuss this later. Once I’ve disposed of this human.”

“You can’t just kill him.” Horror rings from her words.

“What were you planning on doing with him?” I narrow my eyes.

“He was going to drown. I had no choice but to save him.” Maris waves her hands around like she’s making perfect sense.

“Yes, you did.” I thrust my arms out forcefully to exaggerate my opinion.

“We can’t kill him,” Pasha says, rubbing her head. She looks stressed as she loops around in a pacing manner.

“We can’t let him return to the land. He’ll bring more people to our waters,” I say.

“Guys. Sorry to interrupt this crazy plan you’re making up, but I have no intention of revealing your secret. All I want is the jug.” Kasper points to a tattoo on his leg of the Aquarius water healer. In mer school, we learned a lot about stars and the zodiac system.

“I already told you, we don’t have it,” Maris says. Her voice is still shouty, but her words soften towards the end.

“What are we going to do?” Pasha asks. She drags her hands down her face.

I point at the picture. “Actually, I’ve seen this before.” I shrug, not giving all my secrets away at once.

“If you paid attention at school, it was in the curriculum,” Maris bites out.

She’s obviously still pissed with me. It’s not that I don’t like her, but the sooner she realises the world isn’t all sunshine and calm waves, the better. That’s always been her problem. She’s smart, pretty, and annoyingly good-natured. Although, this human might be her downfall.

“Close to Atlantis City, I’ve seen that exact picture.” It’ll be fun to liven things up around here. An adventure sounds good, especially if it helps Maris see the sense in her actions. She needs me by her side to rule the kingdom. I’m the right person to be king.

“Excellent. Then you can help me,” Kasper says.

I never thought I’d agree with a human, but this is my opportunity to fix my relationship with both mermaids. I won’t let him leave the ocean, but I can prolong his fate. “Okay.”

“Wait. Why would you help him?” Pasha asks, narrowing her eyes.

I shrug. “I’m bored. I’ll try anything to make my day more exciting.”

She huffs and folds her arms. I guess she thinks that was a dig at her. “Is that all I am to you?”

I don’t get a chance to answer because Maris cuts in. “If you’re going, so am I.”

I rub my hands together. I’m glad Maris is willing to accept the challenge. Maybe I have her pegged all wrong.

“I guess I’m in too,” Pasha says in defeat. She turns her back on me.

Having two women pissed at me is going to make this interesting. I only need one mermaid to forgive me, and it’s not Pasha.
