The smile on my face becomes etched into eternity as Yazmine’s proclamation strengthens my resolve. I never knew how much I needed to hear those words and how fulfilling it is to know that someone awaits my return.

She deserves everything I can offer her, and I plan on giving her the world.

But first, I must deal with our enemies to ensure her safety in the future.

“Are these the scumbags who kidnapped Yazmine?” Draco asks when we meet up in the surveillance room.

I nod, internally fuming. “Yes. Belinda and her friends.”

Draco stares long and hard at the screen projected from a surveillance camera that watches over the dungeon. He shakes his head and turns to me.

“Something doesn’t feel right,” he says. “Has anyone had access to Skarlett’s cell?”

“Only those allowed to take her food,” Aidan replies, drawing closer to the screen. “Wait… Is that… Ruby?”

He points at one of the dragon shifters in the holding cell, pulling Draco and my attention there. I recognize the female dragon shifter.

“Yeah. That is Ruby,” I murmur, turning to Aidan with a frown. “Why?”

“She was one of the dragons allowed to take food for Skarlett,” Aidan reveals.

“I knew it,” Draco nods. “If my suspicions are correct, Skarlett instigated the incident.” He runs a hand through his hair, brows furrowed in deep contemplation. “We need to get to the bottom of this.”

“We have to get the truth from them. Perhaps Aidan and I can follow through with that,” I suggest.

“Yes,” Draco agrees with a nod. “You get the truth out of them. And we’ll have to address the clan. This can’t happen again.”

“Already on it. Felix is arranging the meeting,” I tell Draco.

He pats me on the shoulder, my chest filling with pride. “Thanks, brother. We’ll need to address this problem. And we cannot use the death penalty as a scare tactic.”

“I know,” I sigh, recalling why I’d prevented myself from killing the perpetrators. “But we have families to take care of now. We’re not reckless killers.”

Draco concedes with a nod, then frowns at me. “Did you just say “families”?”

“Yes, brother. Yazmine is pregnant.”

My eldest brother’s praise comes in the form of another pat on my shoulder, his excitement only dampened by the task at hand—dealing with treachery. It’s Aidan who appears more excited, hugging me and voicing his praise.

While I stare at my brother, the alpha of the Aurora Dragons, I realize why he’s become who he is. He’s changed, just as I have. All because of a human. I understand now.

For so long, I aimed to be just like him. Then he mated with a human, and I couldn’t stand him any longer. Until Yazmine came into my life and changed the trajectory of my beliefs. Now, I’m proud to say that I’m just like Draco.

“Find out the truth from those scumbags, and we’ll figure out how to deal with them,” Draco says as he heads to the door. “I need to go. Lily needs help with Tyson.”

When Draco leaves us alone in the room, I glance one last time at the screen to ascertain that the dragon shifters in captivity can’t escape. I turn to my best friend then, offering him a curt nod. “I’ll see you at the meeting later,’ I pat him on the shoulder. “Make sure no one goes into the dungeon until then.”

He nods his understanding with a raised brow. “Do you not want to celebrate the success of your human mating process?” he asks.

I shake my head, ready to leave with my hand on the handle. “My family needs me right now.”

The family that I have created.

Chapter 28 - Yazmine

Staring at the man sleeping beside me, I’m compelled to reach out and stroke his cheek. Giggling under my breath when he stirs, he opens his eyes and flashes me with the warm depths of gold.
