He’s so calm right now, while my heart does somersaults in my chest. I’d been in Aurora Island for almost a month, and I hadn’t considered that I would have to meet Aragon’s parents eventually.

That, too, is in a hotel restaurant in the middle of bustling Seattle.

Great.

“N-no, I haven’t,” I say as I reach for the brush, combing it through my hair with wary eyes, watching my reflection. “Your parents, huh? What are they like?”

“Not your typical pair of parents,” he titters when he catches my reflection in the mirror and stops. “Sorry. I didn’t mean to be callous.”

I frown, setting the brush on the dresser before turning to him. “What do you mean?”

Aragon shrugs. “I know you don’t have—” he gulps down his words and bashfully turns his face away.

Realizing what he meant, I do not feel sadness. Instead, my heart flips, my lips curving into a smile. “You didn’t say anything wrong, Aragon. I’ve made peace with their absence. That’s why I am where I am today.”

Aragon lifts his face. “A dragon shifter’s prisoner?” he hesitantly teases.

Giggling, I shake my head. “No. A paleontologist,” I reveal with a smile. “Both my parents were studying fossils. It’s how they met.”

He nods his head slowly, pressing his lips into a firm line. “I would love to hear more, but…” he presses a finger to his temple. “... My brother just sent me a mind link to inform me that Lily’s family has arrived.”

The smile remains etched on my lips as I follow Aragon to the elevator. The comfortable silence that follows gives me a moment to think about the past week and how different he’s become.

He’s quite… pleasant. Especially today, since we arrived in Seattle, he’s been more attentive to my needs.

It’s strange, but I allow myself to fall into its comfort. It allows me to enjoy the moment without worrying about the future. It’s not like we’ve gotten to talking about that part.

All we’ve been doing is having the most incredible sex imaginable…

“Are you okay?” Aragon asks, jolting me from my sinful thoughts.

I press a palm to my cheek where the heat has risen. He probably noticed how flushed I’d become from recounting another steamy session in the shower just a few minutes ago.

“I’m fine,” I giggle girlishly, sliding my arm into his. We’re meant to pretend we’re the happiest couple for Lily’s family’s sake. He’d given me a complete run-down of the lists of alibis for the humans, drilling it into my head while he pounded me from behind.

Although walking hand in hand into the restaurant is meant to be a facade to keep up appearances, I can’t help but feel like it’s natural. Even Aragon perfectly plays his part as my charismatic boyfriend and younger brother; it doesn’t feel like an act.

“This is my girlfriend, Yazmine,” he introduces me to the group of humans on one side of the table.

The older man introduces himself as Lily’s father. I meet her mother and her sister, too, before Aragon leads me to our side of the table. He charmingly pulls out my chair, and I’m ready to melt.

Who is this man, and what has he done to the grumpy dragon shifter?

“Yazmine…” A soft, lilting whisper beside me has me turning my head. The woman seated beside me has the most vibrant blue eyes, her skin as clear and radiant as if she had sprung out of a magazine. She leans over and whispers in my ear, “I’m Phoenix Vulkan, Aragon’s mother.”

I gasped as she leans back, offering me the warmest smile. I blush profusely as she stares at my face appreciatively. “You’re prettier than they described you.”

I giggle under my breath. “Well, that just depends on who described me,” I muse. “It’s lovely to finally meet you.” I scan the table, noting that there are a few faces I haven’t seen before.

“You haven’t met Felix and Draco before,” Phoenix points out.

I nod, discerning who Draco is from how uncannily he resembles Aragon. Except he wears a beard. Then there’s Felix, who’s like the carbon copy of his mother.

“My husband, Dedrik,” Phoenix whispers as the man sits beside her.

I offer him a warm smile, remaining discreet about our first meeting for the sake of Liy’s family. Deep down, I’m squirmish from having just met Aragon’s parents. Not that it means anything. It’s not like I’m really his girlfriend—just the mate intended to produce children for him.

I’m also surprised by how much Draco and Aragon resemble their father.
