When his eyes sparkle with keen interest, I realize that I have something he wants. Information and knowledge is invaluable at times.

Mentally, I smirk, knowing I have the upper hand. “In exchange for telling you that, I’d like to go home.”

Aragon’s eyes narrow into the tiniest slits. “Go home? What for?” he scoffs. “You have nothing to go back to.”

“Except my work. My research,” I challenge. “It might be redundant to someone like you. But to me, it’s everything.”

“Look, I couldn’t care less,” he grunts. “All I’m interested in is you giving me the info I need. If not, I’ll make your life a living hell here.”

“So be it,” I chuckle sardonically as I step back and calmly take a seat on the bed. Shrugging, I say, “Make my life a living hell, dragon. And you will never know where that bone came from.”

His nostrils flare as he glares at me angrily. I’ve just challenged the dragon, and he has no idea how to fix the situation.

Serves him well, I think scornfully as I watch him storm out furiously. Two can play this game, and I won’t back down. It’s my only ticket out of here.

Chapter 9 - Aragon

Angrily huffing and puffing down the hallway, I just want to get out of the castle. My steps are deliberate as I head out, making a beeline for the closest exit when I pass the study. Stopping abruptly, I take a few steps back and look inside at the bone.

Yazmine is not the only one that tells me where the bone comes from. Absentmindedly, my hand goes into my sweatpants pockets to extract my cell phone. I gulp hard as the thought comes to mind, prompting me to unlock the screen and stare at the phone in deliberation.

With my thumb hovering over the contact list icon, I quickly decide against my initial instinct. Well, not instinct. But perhaps it is a last-ditch attempt to hang onto the semblance of sanity that prevents me from sacrificing my existence to mating with a human.

Delilah…

At least, the memory of her that remains alive in my mind. She’s the one who’d gifted me a potion that would shield my presence with a few mere sprays. Like perfume, the potion had been extremely helpful when the Vulkan siblings crossed into Samui Island when the once-opposing dragon clan abducted Lily.

We could break through the barrier of their dome stealthily without alerting their security systems.

All because of a witch’s potion.

A witch I would have been able to consult now if she hadn’t chosen the coven over me.

As a stuttered breath escapes my lips, I quickly shove my phone away shamefully. I can’t believe my mind went back to her again. It’s a chapter in my life that I closed.

No.

The entire book was shelved after the cover was sealed, never to be opened again.

I shouldn’t think about her. I need to have a level head, thinking up solutions that won’t have me leaning on my past.

Taking a deep breath, I head into the study and stare at the bone as if it’ll give me the answers I seek. Perhaps it does because I’m suddenly struck with an idea.

Nodding to myself, I make my way out of the castle and take a moment to breathe in the sweet warmth of the summer sun.

Draco… I call out mentally through the mind link of the dragons to my brother, who playfully glides and twists through the air to entertain Lily and baby Tyson, who watch from their balcony.

When his dragon eyes meet mine, he whimpers at Lily before spearing his head toward the ground. He flashes back to human form and comes jogging over.

“What is it, Aragon?”

“I’m heading to the outside to bring the human’s equipment back to the island.”

He raises a brow. “So you’ve made a deal with her?”

“Yeah,” I lie, mentally grimacing for having to lie to the alpha. I’d promised them that I would strike a deal with Yazmine so we could know where the bone was found. If it belongs to one of the Aurora Dragons, we need to figure out if there’s more of its remains. It will need to be correctly identified and given an honorable burial.

I’d promised my family that I would be civil enough with Yazmine so that she could give us the answers we need. In hindsight, that is impossible when she infuriates me.
