How can she be happy saying all these things?

“Well, not just him. But carrying a dragonspirit child allowed me to become immortal,” she continues. “And now we're gonna get married—”

The rest of what she says falters off in my mind. I'm trying to process all the things I did hear, and I'm having trouble doing that.

“W—wait…” I stammer, throwing up my hands and waving them dismissively. “You’re gonna have to slow down there, princess. I’m not following.”

The young woman who claims to be the willing mate of a dragon shifter blushes profusely, cheeks reddening like roses.

“I’m no princess, Yazmine,” she giggles shyly, cupping the sweet sound with a hand over her mouth as she throws her head back. I can’t help but notice her elegance, just like a princess.

“I happened to be exactly where you are right now. So I understand how you feel.”

“Oh…” I scoff, finally moving and dragging my feet to the bed. “... You have no idea how I’m feeling right now.”

“Hm…” she contemplates, pressing a finger on her chin

“... Confused? Angry? Slightly horny?”

“Horny?!” I blurt out in disbelief. “I don’t feel that way!”

“Oh, come on!” Lily rolls her eyes as she leans forward, elbows pressed on the thighs. “You have to admit that your dragon captor is to die for. I would know…” She lifts her hand and carelessly inspects her manicured nails. “... Draco is the older, matured version of Aragon.”

I frown at the woman. “Who’s Draco? And Aragon?”

Lily lifts her eyes, brows furrowing as she tilts her face to one side. An uncomfortable shiver runs down my spine from her staring at me.

“He didn’t tell you his name?”

I shake my head, prompting the woman to roll her eyes and turn her face to the ceiling, sighing an irritated breath. I sit silently, watching her, in awe of her calmness.

Doesn’t she realize the absurdity of this whole thing?

“Of course, he didn’t. They’re all a bunch of assholes,” Lily groans as she sits forward again and sighs. “Has he told you anything?”

I shake my head. “Not really. Just that I’m meant to be his mate and produce children for him.”

Lily rolls her eyes again, making a chattering gesture with a hand next to her ear. “Same old yappity-yap,” she blows an irritated breath through puckered lips. “Okay, this is gonna take a while, but hear me out.”

“Er—Okay?” I say with uncertainty. I don’t think she’s giving me a choice. But I’m curious, nonetheless.

“The dragon shifters are at risk of going extinct,” she says, pointing at her pinky finger as if she’s ticking off a checklist.

“I got that from my captor already,” I inform her.

“Okay,” she nods, pointing at the next finger. “They have a Dragon Council, which makes the big decisions around here. One of those decisions was that to save their species from extinction, they would take to an age-old tradition of dragon shifters mating with humans.”

“And this was done forcefully?” I raise a skeptical brow. “Without our consent?”

“Essentially, yes,” she concedes as she blows out a breath through puckered lips. “But they don’t just pick us at random. The dragons have advanced technology that sifts through our DNA and matches it to the male. It’s called the Cube of Knowledge, which apparently knows everything.”

“I guess it didn’t know that I wouldn’t agree to any of this,” I scoff. “Please, I just wanna leave. I don’t care much about the details. It worked for you; it definitely won’t work for me.”

Lily stares at me compassionately. “At least try, Yazmine.” She sighs defeatedly. “Aragon isn’t as bad as you think he is.”

So, the grumpy dragon shifter man is Aragon. “More like Aro-gant,” I sneer.

Lily giggles at my feeble attempt at a joke. “I’m sorry,” she apologizes as she calms down. “I know you’re going through a lot right now. But I beg you…” she claps her hands together like a prayer. “... Please give it a shot. You have nothing to lose.”
