Liam offered me a sympathetic smile. “Sawyer wants a word.”

SAWYER

She wasn’t mine.

I knew she wasn’t mine and yet the moment I saw Liam standing too close to her, I wanted to shove him away and fuck Callie in front of him just to stake my claim.

A claim that wasn’t mine because Callie didn’t belong to me.

But, I wanted her to.

Every second she was near me; I craved her. The softness of her skin, the gentleness in her smile. I wanted to wind her long brown hair around my fist and pull just hard enough for those honey-butter brown eyes to widen in delight. I wanted to run my thumb along her plump lower lip and coax her to open up to me in all the ways she desired.

She was an addiction that simmered under the surface, a pleasant itch I knew I would never scratch because she was my assistant and there were rules in place. Too much red tape to ever let me get that close to her.

Until I saw Kane flirt with her. Then Liam.

Was my presence not enough to warn them away? Or did they think it was some kind of game?

I couldn’t decide, and seeing Liam wink at her was the last straw. Whatever chains remained to keep me shackled broke away, and the hunger I had for Callie Everheart rose to new heights.

She was mine and I was going to remind everyone of that.

“Sir?” She knocked softly on my door and peered around the edge, scanning the office for me from the desk to the window where I stood half observing the city.

“Come in.”

While her steps were confident as she entered and closed the door behind her, there was a cautious air about her. I couldn’t tell what Liam said to her but her eyes darted back and forth as if she was expecting me to surge up and yell at her.

I would never. In all my years here, I had never raised my voice at anyone other than my father. My childhood taught me that yelling in someone’s face did very little for their motivation to obey and I couldn’t subject Callie to that.

Not that I didn’t enjoy her looking a little nervous. It reminded me of how good she’d looked flat on her back below me the other week, with her cheeks shining pink and her hair ruffled and sexy.

“Liam said you wanted to see me?” Callie approached my desk and hovered near her usual spot. “Is something wrong?”

“You could say that,” I replied, slowly turning to face her fully.

Deep down, I knew it wasn’t a good idea to blur the lines but I couldn’t resist her any longer. I saw how she looked at me from under her lashes when she thought I wasn’t paying attention or how she went the extra mile to make sure every detail of my day – including my lunch – was exactly the way I liked it.

My advances wouldn’t be rejected. I was sure of it.

Blurring the lines was dangerous and a straight shot to court.

Right now, I didn’t care.

I approached Callie slowly.

Sleeping with my assistant. Unthinkable.

What an intoxicating thought.

“There’s not a lot that makes it past me.” Each step was like a lion stalking its prey and the closer I got, the less Callie was able to look me right in the eye. “I see more than people give me credit for but one thing I cannot abide is inappropriate conduct in the workplace. Crossing the line is dangerous, no matter how good the reward might be.”

Callie’s trimmed brows pulled together, forming a worry line that deepened as I got closer.

“Has something happened?”
