Page 37 of Finding Her Home

“Ugh. I told her not to tell anyone.”

“I think specifically you told her not to tell Alex. And technically, I’m not Alex.” Erin smiled at her and Vic screwed her face up.

“Can I come in?” Erin asked.

Vic shrugged and stood back, opening the door properly for Erin.

Erin came in and sat down on the sofa picking up Hyzenthlay, who was about to crawl out of the room.

“No, you don’t, little one. Come here and see your Aunty Erin.” She bounced Hyzenthlay on her knee.

“Why don’t you tell me what is going on, Vic?”

Vic felt pained as she looked at her friend. “Ugh… I don’t think I can.”

“Because of Alex?”

Vic nodded sadly.

“Okay, so the story I have so far is Alex found out you’ve had sex with Julia and she came over and told you to stop it before you hurt her.”

Vic sighed. “It’s so much more than sex, Bodyguard. I love her.”

“And Alex jumped off the deep end about it?”

“Yes. She was fucking horrible. But, probably right. I’m not good enough for Julia. Julia deserves someone stable who is good at relationships, not like me. ”

“So, you ended it with Julia and ran away?”

Vic laughed drily. “Ah, Bodyguard, you know me so well.”

“Alex isn’t always right, you know. And we both know she does over react and can be unnecessarily harsh.”

Vic looked up at Erin hopefully.

“What makes you think you love her? What has gone on while we were in Scotland?”

“We’ve spent every night together and the days where we could. We’ve been on dates. She’s so good with Hyzenthlay and the dogs. We have such a connection in so many ways. She makes me happy, every day. She’s all I can think of all the time. She told me she loves me.”

Erin looked up and smiled. She took Vic’s hand.

“I’m really happy for you, Vic. It sounds like a real relationship.”

“Really? I’m so worried I’ll fuck it up. Well, I mean, look at me, I told her I didn’t love her and ran away. I’ve fucked it up.”

“That was because of Alex. Alex had half the information and she reacted poorly. If you love Julia, you need to tell her.”

“What about Alex? I can’t go against her word after everything she has done for me. You two are my closest friends and friendship always comes first, right?” Tears were falling from Vic’s eyes. “I do love Julia though. So very much.”

“I’ll speak to Alex. I’ll send a car and some staff to pack your things and a horsebox tomorrow to collect you. Please come home, Vic. The castle is your home. We love you. It isn’t the same without you. We are your family—me, Alex, Matilda, Florence and Frank. Julia. Alex can be difficult, and I know she has hurt you and isn’t always easy to stand up to, but she respects us more when we do stand up to her.”

Vic didn’t know what to say. She felt unsure of what to do.

“How on earth have you been buying food? You didn’t drive that old Land Rover that is sitting out there, did you?”

Vic nodded slowly.

“Jesus, Vic. It looks like it hasn’t been roadworthy for at least 20 years.”
