“Me too, Pink.” I stroked her hair and pulled her onto my lap. “I get so jealous knowing the two of you wake up with each other every morning.”

“Stay over more?”

“I want to. I don’t know how it can work, though. All that coordinating—” I raked my hand through my hair and pulled Emily tighter against my chest. “I’m so annoyed our schedules pull us in different directions. We work at the same place, for fuck’s sake.”

“It shouldn’t be this hard.”

“You two could move in with me?” There. I said it. I fought the overwhelming urge to shut my eyes and disappear.

Bash cleared his throat, and I snapped my eyes to his. “Sorry Bardot. I just—”

“No. Don’t apologize.”

I waited, but he didn’t say anything more. He just stood there, a platter in his hand.

Emily hopped off my lap and grabbed a small fold-out table. Bash set the platter on it and left.

I had said too much. My face burned. Hell, my whole body was on fire, prickling with mortification. I should have kept my mouth shut and not said anything. Just another thing I messed up.

Bash walked back in, a stack of plates and silverware in his hands.

“The breakfast smells delicious—”

He whipped his eyes to mine, and I shut my mouth. I couldn’t read his face. But I could tell he and Emily were sharing a silent exchange, and I sat on the edge of the couch, wholly unable to relax.

“Just tell me no, okay? I overstepped. I got it—”

“Michael,” Bardot stammered. “Stop.”

“Okay,” I whispered, sinking back into the couch.

I was a grown man. This was ridiculous. But I couldn’t help feeling like the little boy that always disappointed everyone. The one who asked for too much and deserved nothing.

He set the plates down and nodded to Emily. “We can’t move in with you—”

My heart sank to my stomach, and I stood up, but he pushed me back down.

“Where are you going?”

“I shouldn’t have asked,” I mumbled.

“Open communication,” Pink said. “We have to be honest with each other if this is going to work. Okay?”

“Okay. Here’s honest—I am totally aware of how much I shouldn’t have asked. The two of you have a good thing going and I shouldn’t have said anything.”

Bardot dropped onto the couch next to me. He put his hand on my knee and Pink leaned against me.

“We can’t move in with you—”

“You’ve already said that—”

“Because,” he said louder. “This is the last place Rob lived.”

Realization washed over me, and I sank back, throwing my hands over my face. “Guys. I am so sorry.”

“Don’t be.” Emily rubbed my arm. “It’s on us. We’ve tried to sell this place. To move somewhere new, but we can’t.”

“I know it’s not as nice as your place, but what if you moved in here?” Bardot asked. “If we want to see each other more, it’s the only way. We work together and look how deprived we’ve been the last couple of weeks—”
