He was one of the enthusiastic wavers as he boarded the plane. I would tag him in the post and add some emojis—he would love it.

Julie came up to me, a clipboard in her hand and her signature smile lighting up her face. “All set?”

“Where’s Savage?” Mac hadn’t come out with the rest of the team, but he should have. I had talked to him briefly that morning, and he hadn’t mentioned anything out of the ordinary.

Julie smirked and leaned in. “He’s waiting out Lightning.”

“What’s with him and Lightning?”

Before she could answer, Mac strolled out of the building and I hit record. Instead of waving or nodding, he blew the camera a sultry kiss, his eyes hungry. So hungry my body responded with a flash of heat and flutters. Sorry fans. That video would stay on my phone.

“Savage—” I cleared my throat after his name came out like a squeak. “I had a few things I wanted to talk to you about. Any chance we could sit together?”

He halted, his carry-on bag smacking his shoulder. “I would love to.”

“Great.”

“But it depends—”

My shoulders sagged, and I fought a sigh. “On Lightning?”

He nodded and matched my stride as we boarded the plane.

“What’s he got over you?”

“I’m like his lucky charm, and I can’t convince him otherwise. I even bought him a rabbit’s foot, hoping it would free me from my shackles, but now he insists on using that and making me sit by him.”

“Well, goalies are the superstitious ones, right?”

“We’re all a little irrational with our rituals and lucky charms.”

“What did you do to earn such a coveted title?”

“I wanted to talk to him about this new electrolyte mix he was drinking, and the plane ride seemed like the right time to talk to him without interruption.”

“Was it worth it?”

Mac twisted his face in disgust. “It tasted like chalk. McClanahan has a deal with this other company that’s so much better.”

“You poor baby.” I stuck out my lower lip and stepped in front of Mac as he stepped aside for me to go down the row before him.

Lightning sat up straighter and waved Mac over. Mac smoothed his face into neutrality before breaking into a plastic-melting smile that would’ve fooled me if I hadn’t known better—or noticed the slight twitch in the corner of his eye.

“This is my stop, Pink.” He flung his bag overhead like it weighed nothing and stepped forward, but caught himself before he did anything more. He was impulsive, but not dumb.

Kissing the team’s social media manager in front of all the guys would not go unnoticed.

“See you when we land, Savage.”

He blew me a kiss and plopped next to Lightning. His captor was at least considerate enough to give him the window seat.

Bash was a few rows back, headphones on, immersed in a book. I tapped him on the shoulder and he ripped his headphones off.

“Hi.”

His low voice cut through me and I slid in next to him.

“Cool kids sit at the back, eh?”
