I scrambled to the couch and unlocked it.

Holding my phone like a fragile holy grail, I stared at Evan. “She wants to talk.”

“Great!”

“Why are you smiling? That’s bad isn’t it?”

“It might not be. You owe it to yourself to find out. You owe it to her.”

“Right.” I read the text again.

“Why are you still standing there? Go home, man!”

“Right,” I said as I grabbed my jacket.

I should have packed an overnight bag so I could at least come home clean with freshly brushed teeth, but in my haste to leave, I wasn’t exactly thinking clearly.

“Thanks Ev—”

He pointed to the door and laughed. “Go.”

Chapter Thirteen

Emily

I unfolded my legs and stretched them out. That didn’t feel right. I crossed my ankles and glanced out the window. That didn’t feel right, either. Crossing my legs, I tucked them under me and stuck my hands between my thighs and calves.

Nothing could steady my nerves as I watched Bash pull into the driveway.

I lost all my courage as soon as I left Roxie. She had me thinking I could confront Bash, but now that he was here, I was ready to run.

He stepped out of his car wearing the same outfit he was in last night, and I burned with embarrassment. He had probably found his own date, and I ruined the morning after glow with my cryptic text.

I kind of didn’t care if I ruined his date, though. The thought of him out with someone else twisted my stomach into an aching lump.

It was such a double standard.

I had a fun time with Mac and I wanted to see what was going to happen between us. But I wanted to know if there could be something between Bash and me.

The thought of either of them with someone else made me sick.

Bash entered the house, calling out my name before he saw me on the couch.

“There you are.” He grinned and bent down to hug me.

“What have you been up to?” I was proud of how casually I asked this.

“I stayed at Evan’s last night—Sorry for not texting.”

Evan. I could have slumped with relief, but I stayed rigid, trying to act as normal as possible.

“You’re a big boy. You don’t have to answer to me.”

He laughed and plopped on the couch next to me, his arm draped over me all casual, like I wasn’t sitting here about to jump out of my skin.

“Last night—” I stared at the door where Bash had leaned like he was some debonair leading man ready to stake his claim on me. I bit my lower lip and sighed. “What was that all about?”

“It was a little over the top, wasn’t it?”
