“How so?”

“It’s—” She stared at her nails, and I leaned in toward her.

“Don’t. If you’re not comfortable sharing, I’m okay not knowing.”

Her shoulders relaxed and a soft, sad smile tugged at her lips. “It was a really hard anniversary for me.”

“Did Bryce know?” I ground out.

“Yep.”

“Show me where he lives, and I’ll take care of him.”

Her eyes bulged, and she shook her head. “Absolutely not. He’s not worth it.”

I grabbed the back of my neck, adrenaline coursing through me as all the parts of her story joined, forming a clusterfuck of a morning for her.

I didn’t like to see her hurting.

And if I couldn’t knock that asshole to the ground, I needed to get the adrenaline out of my body some other way.

“I could help you forget all about him.” I traced a line from her knee to her inner thigh and she gasped.

“I don’t do more than kiss on the first date.”

“Then I’ll make it a kiss you’ll never forget.”

I longed to slide my hand between her legs, to feel if she was as wet as I could sense she was. I was ready to burst. There was no way she was handling this connection between us any better than I was.

I spread my hand across her lower back and pressed our chests together, parting her lips with my tongue as she moaned into my mouth. Her breath was warm and sweet on my lips and I matched her moan as I claimed her mouth with my tongue, kissing her until she squirmed against me, shifting her legs.

She crawled onto my lap as her hands trailed soft paths along my arms, spreading across my chest. I cupped her face, deepening the kiss as her hands found my hair, tugging me closer than humanly possible.

She might have had a rule against going further on the first date, but her body wanted more.

Hell, I wanted more.

I needed to pause this before we reached a point neither of us wanted to stop.

“Emily,” I murmured against her lips.

She opened her eyes, reluctantly pulling back.

I stroked her jaw, and she groaned.

“I didn’t want to stop, either,” I admitted, hoping she wouldn’t think there had been anything wrong on my end.

“I guess I haven’t had a good kiss in a long time.” Her eyes were glazed as she flicked them down to my lips. “Maybe ever.”

And who was I to deny her more?

Chapter Eleven

Emily

“Hopefully your flour is well-stocked.” I breezed past Roxie and pulled open the pantry that contained all the dry goods I needed.

“Was the date that bad?”
