“Good day.”

“This way, sir.”

She led us to another part of the building. It was a vast space made out of metal.

This was where the testing would be done.

On a long metallic table, there were three drones. I was rest assured that they were perfect. I witnessed the testing in the administrative building.

“I’ll alert the team of your presence, sir.” I nodded, glancing at my wristwatch. We had about forty minutes before the meeting began.

Elizabeth left, leaving both of us in the large room.

Before the silence could descend, I spoke. “Come.”

I headed to my office. I had a small, well-furnished one here, and it was soundproof from the noises.

I pushed past the door, gesturing for her to walk in before I entered. There were just two chairs and a table in the office.

“Have a seat.” I cringed when I realized how my words sounded like an order.

She did. I took my seat too.

We were now sitting opposite each other, with her avoiding my gaze like it was fire.

“You don't want to talk,” I breathed. I couldn't bear any more awkward silence.

Her eyes flitted to mine. I half expected silence to be her response but was glad when she spoke.

“There really isn't much to say.”

I sighed. She was still angry. Frankly, anyone would be. I kept the sex pictures from her when it would obviously be detrimental to her career.

“I'm sorry, Evie.”

“For what?” Her voice was monotone.

“For everything.”

For everything that led us here.

But I wasn't sorry for bringing her from Minnesota… and it wasn't just about Sophie.

“You think sorry fixes everything,” she whispered.

“I know it doesn't. It fixes nothing, not especially for the weight of your sacrifice.”

She took in a sharp breath. I watched her blank facade slowly peel as tears brimmed her eyes.

“What... What would have happened if Laura had released those pictures?” A tear fell.

I winced.

“I wouldn't have let that happen.” I quickly stood up, placing myself before her.

“I wouldn't have let that happen to you, Evie.”

She stared at me. “I— I don't know, Ethan. I—” Her lips quivered.
