I looked to find the source of my troubles in a tight-fitted skirt and flowery blouse.

There was a certain glow to her. She looked beautiful.

“It's time to go to the testing facility, sir. The meeting with the Chief starts in about three hours.”

Or didn't she want to leave? She hadn't said anything about leaving since the incident with her father. She really did care for Sophie.

My tongue itched to ask her, but I held it back.

“Okay.”

She turned and walked out.

Tugging the lapels of my suit, I refocused my attention on the impending meeting.

All of Project Hornet’s team members were already at the facility.

This would be an authentic performance review of the drone in action. The Chief wanted to see the drone perform a real-life operation. We were going to give her that.

After shutting down my system, I made my way out only to meet a well-prepared Evie just in front of my door.

“Ready?”

She nodded. “Yes, sir.”

We made our way into the elevator.

Perhaps it was the confined space or how she kept smoothening nothing off her skirt. The air was rife with tension. It made me adjust the ends of my own suit.

When I glanced at her again, her gaze was fixed forward, on the elevator doors. I wanted to talk to her— to just… get something out of her, but what could I say?

How are you? Don't you want to leave?

No, that didn't make any sense.

This was how she’d been since the incident four days ago. Rigid… stiff.

Something told me she did it on purpose to ward off unnecessary talk. And it was working.

We exited the elevator and headed to the car.

“Lewis will drive us.”

I didn't know why I announced it. Hell, I didn't even know why I requested for Lewis to be here. Perhaps because I wanted to relieve myself of any stress today, I wanted to… just be.

I quickly opened the door before Lewis could and she climbed into the back seat. I entered after her.

I didn't like the space she gave. I hated the silence even more.

So I shut my eyes, listening to the sound of her uneven breathing.

“We’ve arrived, sir.”

I opened my eyes to Lewis’ announcement.

Evie climbed out. I followed. Now, all we had to do was wait.

“Good day, sir,” Elizabeth, the manager, greeted.
