“I need this job and don’t want to do anything to compromise it,” Payton says, and a part of me feels disappointed.

I wanted to hear her say the word or give me a sign. But she only looks worried.

“You won’t,” I say and release her.

I punch the button and the elevator begins to move once more.

I’m an idiot.

Here I am, risking my entire future for a woman who is concerned about her job. A job she could replace in a few weeks.

One I was going to take from her after the launch. I won’t. I can’t do that to her now. She is doing an excellent job under the circumstances and I’m professional enough to acknowledge good talent when I see it.

But that she isn’t interested in me past the fact that I’m a successful good-looking billionaire she probably wants to fuck, but not enough to risk her job, stings.

I could learn a few things from her.

Except all I feel is fucked off.

THE MASERATI ROARS to life in a loud grumble.

“Oh, my god,” Payton exclaims, and I can’t hide my smile. This car is my pride and joy and I like that she’s impressed.

Like a teenage boy, I rev the powerful engine and slide on my sunglasses. She grins back at me, and an unfamiliar feeling comes over me as I watch her sitting beside me, wrapped in the white leather.

She’s so fucking beautiful.

I have no right wanting her this much and being angry with her for protecting her job. What a hypocrite I am.

Gripping the steering wheel, I slide the vehicle into drive.

“Seatbelt on, sweetheart.”

I PULL OPEN the door to the design office and guide Payton inside.

“Mr. Montgomery,” the receptionist greets me as we walk through the entrance and into the main office area.

Jin Kwan, our head designer, glances up as we approach, then straightens. “Knox, I was told you were visiting.”

I shake his hand. “Good to see you, Jin. This is Payton from StoryCraft. She’s working on the Spring/Summer launch this year.”

“Nice to meet you.” Jin gives her a friendly smile as he shakes her hand.

“You too. I’m excited to see where all the magic happens,” she replies.

Jin laughs.

He’s charmed like everyone else.

“Well, I’d love to say it’s magic, but the truth is, there’s a lot of blood, sweat, and tears that go into designing fashion. Come, let me introduce you to some of the others and then one of my team will show you through the collection in our showroom.”

“I can’t wait.” Payton claps her hands together and once again I’m impressed with her genuine passion for our brand.

One that I’m not letting go unrewarded.

I may have told Mindy to gift her the dress she wore on Friday night. The entire outfit, in fact. My PA was shocked, knowing the value, but I made sure the invoice was sent to me personally.

A hundred of them wouldn’t make a dent in my bank balance, but I could tell Payton loved the dress and after what we did in it, well, I needed her to own it.
