His chair scrapes back and he circles the counter toward me. Savage catches my wrist, removes the fork from my hand and sets it aside. He lifts me out of my seat and into his arms. “I will never pretend this didn’t happen.”

“Carter,” I say.

“I will never forget it happened, Princess,” he says. “You will be with me for the rest of my fucking life thanks to last night. Thanks to now.”

“Yeah, but you made a promise to Cash, and you wouldn’t want to break it. I just want to give you an easy out. And honestly, I don’t want Cash getting weird about this. I want it to be something special. Between us.”

“My promise is not your problem,” he says.

“O-Okay, but you’re happy to keep doing this, even after I leave your ranch?”

Savage’s gaze darkens. He releases me then sweeps his arm across the table, clearing it of dishes, sending them smashing to the ground. He lifts me onto the table and rips down my yoga pants, then brings me to the edge of the counter and sucks my clit into his mouth.

I cry out, shocked, aroused, everything in between.

“You’re mine until you leave this town,” he says, around a mouthful of me.

I forget my fears as he presses me back onto the counter.

SAVAGE

I can’t get enough of her. I can’t get enough of the way she tastes or smells, the way she moans my name or comes on my dick. I don’t want it to end, but the power is back, the cell signal is fine, and it’s only a matter of time until the water dries and she leaves.

Hannah’s curled up on the sofa, a book in hand, her head resting on my lap while she reads. I stroke my fingers through her hair, watching her. I have a book in hand too, but I can’t stop thinking about this beautiful woman in my lap, and it is fucking me up.

I don’t want feelings. I don’t want to care.

The last time I cared, my heart was shredded to shit. I have dealt with the trauma in the best way I can, but it’s not enough.

There’s a reason Cash wanted to keep me away from his sister. I can’t function in a relationship. I’m barely hanging on most days, and it’s not fair to Hannah to put that on her.

Stop considering it.

Be happy with this.

She shifts in my lap and sits up. “You know, our sleep schedule is going to be all fucked up.” She’s adorable in my sweater, and she pushes her glasses up her nose as she smiles at me. “It’s like three in the morning. We should probably try to get some sleep.”

“I struggle to sleep with you around,” I say.

Hannah rewards me with a smile that rips right through the center of my chest. “Beautiful,” I say, and brush her hair back behind her ear. I lean in and press a kiss to her lips, and she responds with a greedy hunger that makes me hard.

“Princess,” I say, warning in my tone. “We’re going to injure ourselves if we keep fucking at this rate.”

She blushes and presses another kiss to my lips. “I can’t help it,” she whispers. “I’ve wanted this for a really long time.”

“I have too.”

She crawls onto my lap, straddling me, but she doesn’t grind into me, thank God. Sore or not, if she did that, I’d lose it all over again. “I’m glad we’re doing this,” she says. “As lame as that sounds. I’ve wanted you for so long, I can scarcely believe this is true.”

I nod. “Me neither.”

“Carter, about what you told me yesterday,” she starts. “With the flowers and the?—”

“Charlotte?” I ask.

“Yes. And the… your…”
