Prologue

Shaylee

I knew going out, letting myself be carefree, was a mistake on so many levels. I loved dropping my guard, letting my hair down, and just being me. Letting that inner beast out to play. Lord help me, I couldn’t stop myself.

I needed the release.

I’d let my friends bring me out, to cheer me up after an awful month of misfortune. I’d lost a job, a boyfriend, and some of my sanity. In that order as it were. I’d wanted to wallow in my misery, yet now that I was here, I wanted to be free of everything. Drinks, dancing, and if I was lucky, I’d find the man of my dreams here. Yeah, that wouldn’t happen, but I wasn’t opposed to finding a hot hunk of man meat to take home for a few hours. A girl has needs, after all.

Monday morning, I’d start a new job at Whitman Publishing. I’d be making a name for myself, by myself. So tonight, I was letting the old Shaylee loose.

Finding so many handsome men, deliciously sweaty, gyrating on a packed dance floor, I may have drooled a little. Yes, please. Come to Mama.

I walked out, my hips swaying, and quickly found myself in the arms of a man who had some serious moves. He was sexy as sin, looked like trouble, and had tattoos on his very muscular, tanned arms. His shirt collar was unbuttoned, the cuffs rolled up showing off said arms. His hair was disheveled…and those eyes. The blue-green pools of lust were taking me in. My slinky black dress, which barely covered some parts of me, looked good. Even if my hips and butt were a little bigger than its previous wearer. I wanted to be a bad girl tonight, and that was what he was seeing.

We’d managed to exchange names between stolen kisses, grinding hips, and tequila shots. James here was a tease. His fingers pressed into my hips as we walked back toward the bar. I needed another shot and a bottle of water. It was hot as sin in this place.

“What’ll it be, beautiful?” The bartender was wearing a devilishly wicked smirk as he watched us.

“Patron, double shot, and a bottle of water,” I said, looking back over my shoulder to where James stood pressed into me.

“Same and keep the change.” He slid a bill on the counter and winked at me.

“Thanks.” I wasn’t opposed to a man buying me a drink, not at all.

I couldn’t tell you how many shots later it was that I was standing in a corner, my heart racing as my libido tripled. I wanted this man naked, right here, right now. Tequila really did make my clothes fall off. It’s not my fault they’d even made a song about it.

His body pressed against mine, us both moving along with the music. I could see my friends dancing in the crowd of bodies. April, Jan, and Danni all had their arms up, guys pressing into them as they moved. If they kept that up, they’d be getting lucky later too.

Right now, though, James was all I could focus on. The burning desire rolling through me started to build as his hand moved down to cup my ass. There was no way I could get any closer to him, but I sure wanted to.

“I think we should get out of here.”

His warm breath fanned down my neck. A shiver had me leaning back to meet his gaze. The fire in his eyes had my breath hitching.

I’d never had a one-night stand before, but I knew at this moment, that was about to change. I knew nothing but his name… None of that mattered though. The smell of him on me. The feel of his large hands skimming the exposed skin along my sides. My dress did nothing to hide my assets. I felt free as his very hard dick pressed against my ass.

“Yes, please…”

He took my hand and led me through the club and out to his car.

That night, a lot changed in my life. Some for the better and some—well, it’s just a life change I wasn’t ready for, but I’ve been working through it all, one day at a time.

Chapter 1

Shaylee

If I found one more of these damn post-its on my door, I was going to stab someone with my number two pencil. I had an assistant—message collector, note taker—for a reason.

She could see it from her desk too. I think she let them do it just to make me batty. Brat! Snatching the yellow paper free of my name plate, I unlocked my door.

“Danni, can you grab the Johnston folder from the conference room for me?” I asked as I pushed open my office door. The coolness rushed out to meet me.

My best friend sat at the desk just outside of my office, writing in a call log. Her head was down, but I caught the tip of her lips tugging up. Her amusement at my aggravation solidified my thoughts. She enjoyed it.

“Sure thing, Lee. I figured you’d be in a full sprint when you got back, and I know you never think of it yourself, so I’ve ordered lunch; it’ll be here in twenty.”

“Thank you, baby Jesus. I’m starving. I wasn’t prepared for that appointment to run so long. I’d hoped to meet with Thomas and his business manager about the upcoming meeting with Netflix.”
