Morgan rolled her eyes. "I'm not a kid."

He laughed. "You're barely out of diapers."

Lance cracked a laugh too.

"Hey, enough bagging on my sister, you guys.”

Atticus pouted. "So you're telling me tonight I have to go to this event without my wife?"

"Oh, I'll be there."

"Right. You'll be there. Except, I can't touch you, or talk to you, or taste you."

Lance and Micah covered their ears, and Morgan just laughed.

I walked over to him and placed a hand on his heart. "I do appreciate you looking out for my sister, but we've got this."

"Fine. You'll arrive with Morgan, and I'll be there trying not to look deadly bored."

"Your father won't be able to resist saying something about the two of us not being together. You can start arguing with him, and Morgan will bump into him and grab the phone. Then we're in business."

His gaze was intent. "You make it sound easy, but you know it won't be."

"If she misses the pass, then I'll find a way to do it myself."

He growled. "No, you won't."

Morgan huffed. "I won't miss. I know how important this is, Atticus. Besides, we're family now. I've always wanted a big brother."

She batted her eyelashes at him, and he sighed. "If I get a bad feeling about anything, it ends right then. Do you understand?"

My sister began cheering and jumping up and down. "Yes, you won't regret this."

"I already do,” he muttered under his breath.

Chapter 38

ATTICUS

I was distracted. Our plans from last night rattling around in my brain as I tried to pinpoint what about it was making me crazy.

Obviously, I didn't love Gwen or Morgan's involvement, I mostly wanted to keep them out of harm's way. But something kept niggling at the back of my mind.

Maybe I'd just had a long day. Predicated by the fact that the day had started without the benefit of having a good morning kiss from my wife. She had taken her team on an off-site bonding trip to paintball. She'd said they really needed the morale booster since they have been grinding so hard on the software.

She was in the middle of the woods so I knew her reception was spotty but I sent her a text anyway. She’d get them when they were done.

Atticus: You didn’t give me a kiss this morning. I hope you know I’ll demand repayment with interest.

If you had told me a year ago, I’d be in my office not focused on the work in front of me and I’d be grinning like a fool, texting my wife, I’d have told you you were living in the Twilight Zone.

Atticus: When are you back? I miss you.

Ugh. Needy much?

Atticus: Did you hit all your targets? Who am I kidding of course you did. My Ness is a badass.

Atticus: Speaking of asses, what are you wearing? Some Lara Croft type outfit? You know Mike on your team won’t be able to function.
