Gavin was chatty enough asking me how it was. After the fourth or fifth terse, one-word answer, he stopped talking. I felt terrible, but I just needed some acclimation time. I hated the idea that we had to continue the farse. I hated the idea of why it was necessary. My asshole father-in-law was trying to kill me.

Who did that? Running around trying to murder people.

Oh, you know, murderers.

But what had I ever done to him? It was such bullshit. I didn't even realize that Gavin had pulled up to the Faulkner Building until he turned around to me. "Are you okay?"

"Oh, sorry. Yeah. Just deep in thought."

"I know. It's ten feet to the door, and Pierce is waiting right inside for you."

"You guys really thought this out."

"Well, you guys going on an actual honeymoon gave us a little bit of time. You're going to be okay. I promise you."

"Yeah well, my father-in-law is trying to kill me, so I'm not exactly filled with confidence."

"I know. But Atticus isn't going to let anything happen to you. Neither are we."

"Thanks for that, Gavin."

He nodded. "Oh, and for what it's worth, I think you're good for him. He wasn't the same when you were gone."

I smiled at him. "Yeah, I wasn't exactly myself either."

Once inside the building, Pierce and two men I didn't recognize walked me to my apartment. When they said goodnight, I frowned.

Pierce grinned at me. "You're not going to the tunnel tonight."

I stared at him in surprise. "What?"

"Just go inside."

I used my thumbprint and typed the security code into the keypad. My door opened, and I found my husband sitting just inside my new apartment, shirtless in gray sweatpants, holding two glasses of champagne.

I grinned and burst out laughing. "Atticus."

"I love you, Gwenyth."

"What are you doing here?" I glanced around, trying to get some sense of bearing. This place looked like my old apartment. Well, more like a combination of my apartment and his penthouse.

Was that our couch from Atticus's place? Bit by bit, as I took in more of the apartment, I noticed more and more of the things that I'd bought for the penthouse. "Wait, what's going on?"

"I didn't want you to have to play the charade and run back and forth. I'll run back and forth. Unless you'd rather stay at the penthouse, which is fine. But it's still our honeymoon, and I think we're going to make Micah go blind. I believe his exact phrasing was, ‘If I have to see your bare ass shagging your gorgeous wife on the kitchen table, I will go blind.’ So, I figured we'd stay here most of the time. Besides, my schedule is erratic, and no one is monitoring the penthouse. So, it might be easier for me to slip and come see you."

"I'm happy to see your face,” I said with a smile. It had only been a few hours, but I’d missed him so much.

He put the champagne down, and I dropped my bag and ran into his arms.

The scent of him wrapped around me, and I breathed it in deep. I was such a goner. It had only been a couple of hours. Three, tops.

"You're okay, you’re okay."

I realized that the assurances he was murmuring were not for me. They were for himself.
