“So, you and Gwen are…” his voice trailed.

“Figuring it out,” I said, meeting his gaze directly.

“About time.”

The door to Gwen's room opened, and she came out wearing a yellow cap-sleeve sundress that skimmed past her knees. Simple sandals completed the outfit, and she looked good enough to eat. Like a ripe citrus fruit, dangling in front of me, tempting me to pluck it off the tree.

Gavin grinned at her. "Gwen! Good morning."

When my best friend walked over to her and wrapped his arm around her, I growled low."Do you have to touch her?"

Gwen rolled her eyes and squeezed him tight. "Hi, Gavin. It's nice to see a familiar face."

"You look good."

"Yeah, you know, considering someone shot at me not too long ago, I feel okay, I guess."

He shook his head and kissed her hand. "Don't worry about it. You're in the safest place you can be right now."

"So, you say."

I loudly cleared my throat. "Enough with the hands, Gavin."

He chuckled low. "Okay, okay. Mr. Roboto doesn’t like touching."

When Gwen turned to me, she scowled. "Why are you like this? Who hurt you?"

"Lots of people,” I muttered flippantly. “Come and eat.”

“Is there coffee?"

"Yes, but you hate coffee, so there’s tea and that pineapple mango juice you like. I also had the chef make some beignets. I know how much you like them when you’re sad.”

She took a hesitant step then paused and blinked at me. "You remembered that?"

I nodded. I remembered everything she told me. "Of course, your mother used them to cheer you up on your first trip to New Orleans when your father forgot your birthday. Anyway, she made them for you fresh."

Gavin just nodded at me and grinned like an idiot. "Well, I'll leave you two to get ready. I'll see you in a few."

When we were alone, she turned her gaze to me. "What was all that about?"

"He was just here to give me an update on Mom and the attempt in London."

Her hand flew to her chest. "Oh, shit, I didn't even ask about your mother, is she okay?"

I soothed her immediately, someone had shot at us and she was asking about my mother? "Yeah, she's fine. Gavin already confirmed for me that Micah’s with her and no one came after her. Just us."

She sighed, breaking off a piece of a beignet and popping it in her mouth. "What you mean is, someone came for me."

My heart squeezed at the exhaustion in her voice. "I told you. I’ll protect you with my life. Try not to worry too much. I know this is a lot, but know I will do anything to keep you safe. We will find who targeted us and I will make them pay."

She was normally such a fighter. It broke me to see her this scared.

She nodded slowly as she went to the fridge and poured herself a tall glass of juice. When she took a sip, she moaned. "You really do think of everything."

"Obviously not. If I did, we wouldn't be in this situation."

She studied me closely. "You think this is your fault?"
