After the car chase through posh London, and the long flight, Gwen was toast. Simply exhausted so I’d let her sleep in.

I also needed to think and fucking fix this. I’d been on the phone with my team nonstop on the flight and since waking up. My men were on it. They understood the directive. Burn the world to the ground to find out who the fuck tried to take Gwen from me.

I’d tried to live without her. I would never survive that again.

We were in the private villas on palace grounds but with the change in our itinerary, we’d only managed to settle in and crash. When Gavin knocked on our door, he didn't bother waiting for me to say come in before he stalked in like he owned the place.

I nodded at him from the dining table. "Keep your voice down. She’s still asleep."

Gavin scrubbed a hand down his face. “Got it. We’ve all arrived. Pierce has his guys in London pulling CCTV and canvasing.”

I’d been getting updates during the flight yesterday. “Someone check on my mother yet? Is she okay?"

“She’s fine. Micah’s with her now. She’s lucid and in good spirits, and thankfully she still has no idea why she was moved here to the island.”

“Good. We’ll head up to see our hosts then make our way down to see her.”

“I think Micah said he’ll bring her to you. She’d probably love a tour of the palace.”

I could only nod, distracted, my mind replaying everything that had happened over the last seventy-two hours. "If you’re my father, why go after Gwen and not my mother?"

"I don't know. He might not know where she is.”

We’d been careful in my mother’s transfer. My father was unpredictable. There was no telling what he would do to her if he knew where she was. “It’s possible. Yet, somehow he knew we had a meeting with East Hale? How? The meeting was on the calendar, but the location? We changed that in real time.”

“We’re working on the answers. We searched the car. There was a tracking device placed on the bumper. Problem is, we have no idea when that happened or how. No one knew what car you’d take."

I cursed under my breath. "Who had access to the cars?"

“Anyone who can get into the garage of the building, obviously. The team is running checks on the movement of all residents now.”

I scrubbed my hand over my face. Another fucking miscalculation. “Fuck, I was supposed to make her safer. Someone’s been listening in, and I want to know who.”

"We’re on it? You been up to see the Queen and King yet?"

I looked at my watch. "In an hour. I just wanted to let Gwen sleep as long as she could."

"Good. Penny is..." Gavin’s voice trailed as he tried to think of the right word. "Let's just say the queen is displeased you’ve been through such a horrible ordeal. I could have sworn she said she was going to arm up and protect Gwen personally. But that can’t be right."

I shrugged. "She was a Royal Guard once, or did you forget?”

“I know, but somehow I always pictured her as trailing behind some spoiled diplomat’s daughter. The way she talked, she has proficiency with weapons. No way Sebastian will let her though, right? We don’t need her wading into this mess.”

“He’s as possessive as I am, so it’s unlikely. But she was his guard once, and from what I understand she was good, so anything could happen. And right now, we’ll take all the help we can get."

"For a queen, she sure has a smart mouth on her. I liked her immediately." Gavin shrugged. "And she's hot."

I shook my head. "If I were you, I'd be careful. The walls have ears, and the king is very, very protective about his wife."

He held up his hands. "I'm just saying the woman is beautiful. That's all."

"You do not like your dick where it is, do you?" I said with a laugh.

But Gavin kept flirting with the dungeons. "I'm just saying, she is."

I glanced around dramatically and raised my voice a bit. "For the walls listening, while the queen is beautiful, I do not find her sexually appealing in a way that the king should be worried about."

Gavin threw a piece of croissant at me, which I caught effortlessly in my mouth.
