“This is the best news ever,” he murmurs against my lips.

“How are you not scared?” I whimper.

He brushes away my tears with his fingers. “Because I love you, and I want to be with you. I can provide for our baby, Hannah. I can provide for all three of us. I want to do that. I want us to be a family. I guess I am scared, but I’m excited too.”

“No, Luka, this isn’t a good idea,” I say, trying to pull away. He catches my arm and pulls me back.

“What do you mean it isn’t a good idea?” he asks.

“Raising a family in a family with a shady history. I don't think I can do that, Luka. I’m not like Penny and Asher.” I look up at him. “If we do this, I want a clean break from your brother and all his businesses.”

Chapter 20 - Luka

“What do you mean? A clean break?” I ask, feeling deflated after my initial elation. “Hannah, we can do both. I’ve shown you that what we do isn’t that bad.”

“And the things you haven’t shown me?” she asks. “Things that… I don’t know, what if your family murders people? Remember when you sent your cousin to come to save me? He killed people to get to me.”

“That was a rescue mission. They were going to hurt you.” I grit my teeth. “Hannah, my family values loyalty over anything. We always look out for each other. Our baby will have cousins and grow up with wonderful aunts and uncles. Isn’t that what you want?”

“I don’t want to be looking over my shoulder every time I step outside with my baby.” She starts to cry. “I don’t want my baby to have a guard assigned to them.”

“Hannah…” I reach for her hand, but she pulls away. “You said we could get divorced once the threat is over, but I think we should do that sooner, Luka, if you’re not willing to make this sacrifice for me.”

“You’re not thinking rationally,” I say quietly. “Just think about it.”

“If you want us as your family, you must choose.” She turns and hurries upstairs without a backward glance.

I watch after her, grab my car keys, and turn to Monty. “Watch her like a hawk. I’m going to meet up with Arseny.”

“That isn’t going to solve the problem,” Monty says quietly.

“Did I ask you?” I snap.

He holds his hands up and steps back. “Sorry, boss.”

I walk out and straight to my Porsche. I get in and tear down the driveway and into main traffic, causing several people to hit breaks and hoot.

I feel like my heart is being ripped in two pieces, and I need to get away from Hannah. Just to clear my head.

She doesn’t want to be with me if I’m still working with my family. How do I tell Kervyn that? How do I turn my back on my family, who has always taken care of me? No, there must be another way. Maybe if I run the legit side of things.

I feel tears pricking in my eyes, and I pick up my phone and dial Arseny while navigating my car with one hand.

“Yes?” he answers.

“I need a drink,” I say hoarsely.

“I can be at Afantasy in a few minutes,” he says.

“I don’t want to be near Danil or Kervyn,” I reply.

“Okay, your casino then, VIP section has just opened.”

“Deal,” I hang up and direct myself toward my casino. The tears drip down my face, and I wipe them away roughly. I have never had to make such a difficult decision in my life. Why do I have to make this decision? Hannah can be part of my family the way Penny and Asher chose to be part of our family.

They didn’t initially. I remember being so angry with Danil about Asher. She was my best friend, and he cornered her like that to win a bet. But it worked out. Why can’t Hannah see that this can work out as well?

I should be going out to buy baby announcement shit and cooing over her and making love to her and confessing my love everlasting to her. Instead, I’m going for a drink with my older brother, who I’m sure has no idea about relationships.
