“Hey, where’s my heart?”
Katie cocked her head with a shrug. “Hm, I’d say you don’t have one.” And poured steamed milk into the hot matcha tea.
There. Perfect.
“Matcha tea latte.” She gave Taylor his drink and waved at the baby in the stroller. “Tell Chloe I said hi.”
“Right.” Poor guy appeared so dumbfounded she almost giggled.
She went right to cleaning the frothing nozzle. Kelly sidled up to her. “You wanna tell me what that was all about?”
“Nope.”
“Is there something going on between you and Brendan Murray?”
“I’m not talking about this now.”
“Yes, you are. What’s going on?”
Katie threw the cleaning rag down on the counter and turned around. It took every ounce of strength she had not to cry. She shook her head. “Nothing. Now will you just stop? Please?”
Kelly nodded, but the look on her face said this conversation wasn’t over.
“I’m going to take my break now, ’kay?” Mimicking bitchy Stacy.
She quickly glanced at the corner table. His fucking bluer-than-blue eyes were honed in right on her.
He winked.
God, I need fucking air.
She spun on her heels and went out the back door to the alley.
“You’re an arsehole, you know that?”
“I know.” Brendan took a sip of his heartless foamy coffee—it wasn’t bad.
Taylor tipped his chin toward the counter where his sweet girl was engaged in what looked to be a heated conversation with Kelly. “Is she the reason you decided you had to get a cup of coffee?”
Brendan shrugged with a smirk.
“What are you doing, Bren? She’s just a kid.”
He didn’t know why, especially since he’d had the same thought himself, but Taylor saying it out loud made him angry. His jaw ticked. How dare he?
“Are you judging me?”
Taylor remained silent and sipped his tea.
“You, of all people, know me better than to think I’d…”
Taylor grinned. “I do know you better. Besides, Chloe told me and Jess all about your coffee girl.”
“Fucker.” He chuckled. “Your wife don’t know…”
“What?”
Brendan took a long swallow of coffee before he answered. “I fucked up.”
