The instant his skin came into contact with hers she felt it. That connection. Blood coursed through her body. Butterflies tickled her tummy. She couldn’t breathe and her heart was pounding. He clasped her hand in his and brought it to his lips. He placed a light kiss on her knuckles.

“Hello, Katelyn.”

He was the first and only person on the planet who’d ever called her that. Like she was an adult. A grown woman, not a child.

Katie didn’t think she could speak. She really needed him to let her hand go to have a shot at finding her voice.

He let go.

“Brendan.”

Then she turned around to prepare his order.

He sat down with Chloe. They talked and smiled and laughed like he hadn’t just kissed Katie’s hand. Like he’d never kissed her at all. How did the son of a bitch do that? And how did Kelly know him? She was going to ask her.

“Kell, who is that guy?”

She was bent over arranging the pastries. “Brendan?”

“Yeah.”

“He’s our landlord. Well, one of them. He and his cousins own the company that owns this building. We lease Beanie’s and our apartment from them.”

“The whole building?”

It was a converted warehouse that covered an entire city block.

“Yeah. They own Charley’s, a club, and some other stuff too.”

Great.

There’d be no escaping him. Maybe she would be better off at the dorms. Or in a sorority. Katie was legacy to Chi Omega thanks to Kelly, so she was likely to receive a bid to pledge. How godawful could it be?

She turned a blind eye to the table in the corner where he now held the baby in his arms to concentrate on the pour of steamed milk into espresso. The angle had to be just right to get that foam heart on a latte and she’d finally perfected it.

“Hey, Katie Copeland.”

Katie glanced up to see hazel eyes and dimples leaning against the counter. She handed off the heart-art-topped latte.

“Hey yourself, Cameron Mayhew.”

Seeing him didn’t make her heart explode like seeing Brendan did, but then to be fair she hadn’t kissed him either. Katie couldn’t deny he was beautiful. Tall. Athletic. Ripped. He looked freshly showered in a long-sleeved gray T-shirt that was pushed up to his elbows. Perfect arm porn. His hair was similar to Brendan’s. Short on the sides and long on top. Really long. He ran his fingers through it every time it fell into his eyes, which was a lot. She imagined he had a lot of girls at school vying for his attention, so why was he here?

“Can you make four quad-shot lattes for me?”

It was then she noticed the three guys wearing similar team shirts standing off to the side behind him. “Iced or hot?”

“Hot.” He smirked. “And can you come to the game on Saturday? There’s a party at the house after and I’d love to take you.”

“Like a date?”

His smirk grew into a big smile, showing off his perfectly straight white teeth. “Yeah, exactly like that.”

She glanced to her left where Kelly stood grinning, then right to the table in the corner. He was watching, and judging by the tick in his jaw, he was pissed.

Fuck you, you cheating son of a bitch.

She smiled back at Cameron. “I’d love to.”
