Chloe gasped. “You have a baby?”

“No, I do not have a baby.” He shrugged a shoulder. “She, um, she had an abortion.”

“I’m sorry, Tay.”

“Right. I got tested when we came off tour. I haven’t been with anyone else, so that leaves you, little bird.”

“I only slept with two men before Jesse and that was a long time ago.” Taylor raised an eyebrow. “My boyfriend in high school and some jock at a frat party my first year in college. Why do you look so surprised, Taylor?”

He raised his hands as if in self-defense. “I’m not, I’m not.”

“You won’t find my naked ass on google,” she admonished him. “So, yeah, Jesse is the first man I’ve had sex with in three years. And I have an IUD, so no worries there.”

“See, Jess? All sorted. No more condoms. Can we go upstairs now?” Taylor went to stand up.

“Wait.”

And he sat back down. “What is it now, little bird?”

“Are you in a hurry?”

Taylor took Chloe’s hand and cocked his head. “Why yes, Chloe. Yes, I am. You see I’d really love to fuck my new girlfriend. And my boyfriend.” He grinned like a Cheshire cat. “Sans latex.”

Chloe shook her head. “Jesse, how does this even work?”

He pulled her onto his lap. “How does what work, babe?”

“Three.” She blew out a breath. “I searched threesome videos online and the girl always seems to get the short end of the dick, er, stick, and…”

“You watched sex videos?”

Jesse could see the grin Taylor hid behind his hand.

“Yes. I, um, wanted to be prepared.”

“Chloe, it just…it just works, babe.” He held her and kissed his favorite spot along her neck.

Taylor stood and ruffled her hair. “Come on, little bird. We’ll sort it. You’ll see.”

And Jesse followed the man he loved, carrying the woman he loved, up the stairs.

Taylor walked onto the deck. He looked at the water to see if he could spot Jesse and Chloe. They’d left a couple of hours earlier to take the little rowboat they kept at the dock out on the lake. He could have gone with them, of course, they wanted him to, but he declined in favor of a nap. Jesse didn’t push it. The man knew him well enough to know when he needed time to sort his head. And right now he had plenty of shit to sort through.

Conflicted.

That’s what he was. Had they actually agreed to this orchestrated three-way monogamous relationship? For the past seven years he and Jesse did just fine with things as they had been. Sex is sex and love is love, and they didn’t require exclusivity to validate what they were to each other. Until the cherry bomb came along.

Jesse started talking about Chloe soon after he and his cousins opened Charley’s. Taylor didn’t pay him any mind about her at first, but maybe he should have. Jesse never hid his feelings for her from him. Quite the opposite, actually. But Taylor never believed she’d end up here with them. Not like this.

For Jesse, this was about love. But Taylor wasn’t in love with Chloe, and he wasn’t sure if he ever would be. He definitely liked her. He couldn’t deny he was attracted to her. Was that enough for now? And what about her? It was obvious she genuinely loved Jesse, but he wasn’t foolish enough to think she was in love with him. Could she love him? Would this work out if she didn’t? And if it didn’t work out who would Jesse choose—him? Her? Neither of them?

The possibility that he could lose Jesse never occurred to him until then. What if Jesse loved her more? Chloe could give Jesse things he’d never be able to. Things he knew Jesse wanted one day—like babies. Didn’t that make her his nemesis? Perhaps.

Perhaps not.

A switch had flipped last night.

Last night Jesse wanted to make love, he’d said as much. Taylor wanted to fuck.
