“Ew, Dad, can you tell mom how much you love her after we leave the room?” Charlie groaned, letting his head fall to the table with a thud.

“Yeah; it’s totally TMI,” Summer agreed, nodding her head.

“Charles, you should be taking notes, my boy, on how to treat a woman. One day, you’ll be like me.”

Charlie snorted. “What – old?” Charlie giggled like the immature boy he was.

I shook my head, “No, son; you’ll be sitting at the table with your wife and kids, and you’ll be so grateful that you got to this point because this is true happiness. Having people around you who love and care about you is more important than any materialistic item – like a sports car.”

“I dunno, Dad. A sports car is really good to look at.”

“They are, but so is the right woman.” He snickered and shook his head.

“I can totally agree. I love looking at boys – especially the baseball boys. They are so dreamy. I’m hoping Timmy will ask me to the Winter Formal.”

I turned to my only daughter and glared at her.

“Who the hell is Timmy?” Celine laughed and picked up Jessie from the table to stop him from making a mess of his plate.

Summer rolled her eyes in exasperation. “Just a boy, Dad. Don’t worry. We don’t need you to get any more gray hair, old man.” Both girls erupted into laughter, and Charlie grinned, unable to hold in his amusement.

This was exactly what life was about: having a beautiful family and having them laugh at you. I would have killed for this as a child. They didn’t need money to be happy. I just had to prove to Celine that we would be alright as long as we had each other.
