As we sit through it all, Sawyer reaches over and plays with my wedding ring. The diamonds sparkle in the light, and I glance down at the band he had made for me.

“Do you regret how we got married?”

I shake my head and smile up at him. “No,” I whisper back.

Caleb’s made this a grand affair, showing up and catering to anything Lauren’s asked for. It’s still a very intimate and romantic setting, though, not over the top. “Never,” I tell my husband. It wouldn’t have mattered if I walked down a long, elaborate aisle in a fancy old building or if we’d asked hundreds of people to come. The only thing that was important to me was that I married him, no one else. All the other details ceased to matter.

He kisses me and drapes his arm around my shoulders to pull me closer.

Later at the reception, I’m even more convinced the way Sawyer and I went about our wedding was the better route to go. We kept it short and sweet, with plenty of freedom to head back home and relax with each other in bed. And we stayed in bed, enjoying each other several times throughout the night.

Here, we are staying for it all. So many dances. All the toasts. The food. The drinks. Mingling. We barely have a chance to be alone, but as we dance on the floor toward the end of the night, I sigh and rest my cheek against his chest, loving his hard, hot body that never fails to anchor me.

“I’m in pain.” He groans good-naturedly, and I giggle. “I ate way too much.”

“It was all too delicious.”

He smirks down at me. “I can’t believe Marian said it was better than anything she’s ever cooked.”

I grin, loving that of one of the many things we’ve learned about each other, neither of us can hold our own in the kitchen. We’re both hopeless at cooking, but trying and failing together has been so much fun.

“I doubt that. I still don’t understand what her ‘system’ is in the kitchen, but she’s a mastermind.” I thought for so long that it was because she provided honest-to-goodness home-cooked meals, but we’ve sampled others’ cooking, and hers is simply the best.

“That’s why,” he whispers, leaning in close, “Kevin and I started a bet on how long Jason will wait to marry her.”

I snort a laugh. “Just for her food?”

He chuckles, shaking his head. “Nah. It’s a whole host of things that he loves about her. And they’re great together. A good fit.”

I frame his face and kiss him tenderly. “Just like we are.”

A good fit and a perfect match.

It’s all I’ve truly needed to be complete.

Chapter 34

Sawyer

A few months later…

When I married Claire, I was nervous. I wanted everything to be perfect for her that big day. But today, as I guide her into my truck, I chew on my lip and experience, and even worse case of anxiety. As odd as it may sound, today has me more nervous than our rushed wedding day. I wanted our wedding to be one she’d always remember. After all, in her line of work, she’ll be exposed to many weddings and numerous brides.

In the months since we’ve been a Mr. and Mrs., I know she’s content with how we got hitched. Even though she is a participant in the wedding industry, she seems to rely on a sage piece of advice that she heard at Lauren’s wedding.

Better to have a solid, wonderful duration of a marriage than a perfect single moment of one wedding day.

Since our marriage started, we’ve both kept that in the forefront of our minds. Each and every day, we strive to help each other be the best version of ourselves that we can be, and today is a huge example of that.

“I don’t understand why I need to be blindfolded,” she complains in the passenger seat as I drive away from my condo. The construction on our house will start in a few months, and I’m excited about the next phase of our lives. This current upcoming change in her life will keep her preoccupied from the house-planning part.

“To keep it a surprise.”

She crosses her arms and smiles. “But I’ll figure it out. There are only so many roads to turn on, and I’ll follow it with the mental map in my head.”

“What mental map?”

She swats at me playfully. “You’re never going to let me forget how I got lost that first time I drove here.”
