It took all I had to leave Genevieve alone. I circled the block a few times before picking a spot down the street beneath a darkened streetlight. I had a clear view of her front door, but the dark shade of my truck helped me blend in with my surroundings. I settled in for a long night of surveillance. She may not want me in the house with her, but I’d be damned if I didn’t keep an eye on her anyway.

I watched her friend Kendra turn the corner in my review mirror, her blonde hair reflecting the light from each streetlamp she walked by. Knowing Genevieve did as I asked eased my conscience a bit. At least someone would be with her tonight. I would rather it be me, though, and my body agreed with me. Just the possibility of spending a night with her in her room, in her bed, set my nerves on end. My fingers itched to touch her, tease her, show her how good it would be between us. My hand throbbed with the promise of turning her plump ass a bright shade of red before soothing her and sending her flying again.

I shook my head, trying to clear it for the task ahead. I checked Kendra’s progress in my review mirror again and sat up when I saw she wasn’t alone. “Fuck!” Jason had joined her, and by her body language and animated hands, he was pouring on the charm.

I yanked out my phone and hit the speed dial.

“Bro, what is it now? Can’t control the little minx?” Brody’s laughter grated on my nerves.

“I have a situation,” I spoke low.

“Tell me.” Brody became all business.

I gave him the run-down of what happened at lunch and the fact Jason was now escorting Genevieve’s friend to her house. I watched as they passed and sauntered up her driveway. Jason turned and looked right at me as Genevieve opened the door for them.

“Stay on him. Don’t let him out of your sight.” The clack of keys on Brody’s computer echoed in my ear.

“Switching you to hands-free.” I quietly exited my truck and made my way through the shadows to the side of Genevieve’s house. Through the living room window, the glow of the lamps highlighted those inside.

“What do you see, brother?” Brody’s typing had stopped.

“Nothin’ happenin’ yet. They’re all sittin’ around havin’ a glass of wine and eatin’ some cheese and crackers. Jesus, what the hell is his game?” My muscles were coiled with anticipation, ready to spring into action if needed.

“I’ve got Omega Team on call if you need us, brother—the jet’s fueled and ready to go at a moment’s notice. Carter is still workin’ the Fed side, tryin’ to dig up his files. As soon as we get those, we can turn them over along with his location and let them take over.” Brody’s team was the best in the private security business, made up of former Navy SEALs, Black Ops, and others that were never even on a government list anywhere. I didn’t know all the details, only that if there was a hairy situation, they could always find a way out.

“I don’t know if we have time to wait, Brody. My gut’s tellin’ me he’s gonna try to take her tonight.” I watched as Jason moved to the couch next to Genevieve, and she stood and walked to the kitchen, bringing back another tray with coffee mugs and a thermos. She sat back down in the chair Jason had vacated. “Good girl,” I whispered.

“Roger that. I’ll do what I can to move things along. Call me if anything changes. Don’t worry, brother, we’ll remove this jackhole. Then you can sweep your girl off her feet, tie her up, and show her who’s boss.”

I smiled as the line went silent. I had every intention of doing that and much more after we put Jason where he belonged. My heart swelled, knowing Brody had my back. We only saw each other a couple times a year now since he had moved to Florida, joined Trident Security, and recently married his submissive, Fancy. Family reunions were the only time we really had together, and that was among dozens and dozens of family members.

I settled in for the night in the shadow of the porch where I could keep the front window and also part of the back yard in my line of vision. It wasn’t the ideal spot as there were still locations where someone could evade my watch coming or going, but as long as Genevieve was in my sight, I had to make do the best I could.

I watched, wishing I could hear the words exchanged inside. Kendra threw her head back, laughing at something Jason must have said. Genevieve simply appeared uncomfortable sitting on the couch as her friend was oblivious to how agitated she appeared. Jason stood and tried to sit next to Genevieve, and I tensed, ready to interrupt them if needed. But before I could extricate myself from my position, Genevieve got to her feet and disappeared into the kitchen, returning with a bottle of dark liquid. The familiar shape indicated she had pulled out the good whiskey. She took the seat Jason had vacated, cutting him off from attempting to sit next to her.

She poured herself a mug of coffee, adding a healthy dose of the dark liquid to it along with her sugar and creamer. She cradled her drink in her hands as she sat back, Jason waving his hands around as he told one story or another. He suddenly stopped and grabbed a phone off his belt, glanced at the screen, and stood, striding to the front door. He closed it softly behind him before answering.

I sank back further into the shadows, straining my ears to catch his side of the conversation. The girls were still sitting inside, chatting.

“Now’s not a good time.” Jason’s gruff tone was low, the slight breeze floating his words to my ears. “No, I can’t meet right now. I’m in the middle of something.” He began to pace, the phone still snug against his ear. “Why? We were scheduled for tomorrow. I don’t have the money yet.”

“What have you gotten yourself into?” I thought to myself. Whatever it was, it didn’t sound good.

“Not all of the payments have been turned in. Can you delay him at all?” He ran his hand absently through his hair, frustration radiating off him in waves. “Fine, I’ll be there in twenty minutes.”

He ended his call and stepped through the door. The girls turned to him, Kendra’s face falling at whatever he said, but Genevieve’s showed relief as she nodded at whatever he was saying.

I took that chance to move from my hiding spot, shifting around the other side of the garage into the shadows, and waited for Jason to come back out. I gave him a small head start and moved as he turned at the end of the driveway. I glided on silent feet, keeping him within a block of me until I came flush with where I had parked my truck.

Jason stopped at the end of the block in the light of the lone lighted streetlamp. I crossed the street while his back was to me and hopped in my truck, closing the door and wincing as the latch clicked shut. I slunk down, watching over the back seat as he got into a black Lexus that was most definitely not police issued.

He revved the engine and pulled away, passing me and heading down the street. I sat up and maneuvered my truck from its spot, keeping Jason’s brake lights in my sight, and followed him as he zig-zagged through town. He made one stop at the police station for less than ten minutes, emerging with a large black duffel bag.

“What in the ever-lovin’ hell do you have goin’ on in your little town, Jason,” I said to the dead space in my truck. I followed him out of town until he turned down a dirt road that I would have missed. I slowed but continued driving on, knowing my cover would be blown if I followed him. I continued for another mile or two until I felt it was safe to turn around and drive back into town.

I found my way back to Genevieve’s street; her house was dark as I drove past and settled back into my spot just a block away. For now, Jason’s dealings would have to wait. Genevieve’s safety and security were more important. I couldn’t trust that he wouldn’t try to come back by after whatever meeting he had.
