I don’t register the look on her face. Is she pleased, or horrified? I can’t tell.

She takes a moment's pause before asking, “So, I can go out?”

I part my lips. “Within reason…for essentials.”

She sighs again. “Uh huh.”

“Uh huh, what?” I’m not understanding.

“I’m under lock and key here, too.”

I frown. “It’s like that at home?”

“Why don’t you tell me?” she snaps. “You seem to know all about me.”

Okay, so this is an issue and I’m learning that she gets pissed off easily.

Being under her dad’s control is triggering for her.

I’m gonna take a wild stab at the fact she’s daddy’s little girl, like Cash said — and as if her resume isn’t enough to prove otherwise — she’s never been let far enough out of his sight to do anything for herself. Except maybe for college, and even then Cash told me she had security.

Her going on that show was acting out. She was trying to get his attention, and probably that of her boyfriend too.

I can see that the brat aspect of Aspyn’s personality takes a little time to surface, but that’s probably because she’s putting walls up as we speak.

Of course, I’m not gonna go into what I know about her. I don’t want her to think I’m some kind of weirdo. I’m only researching so I know how to protect her.

This is my job now. I can’t fail Cash.

This is important to him, so it’s important to me.

“Like I said, your father briefed us on the basics,” I go on. “And that nobody knows where you are, including your best friend.”

“What’s her name?” she challenges.

I let out a slow breath. “Tara.”

She shakes her head.

“So?” I prompt. “Does she know you’re here?”

Again, she shakes her head.

“But she has your new number, right?”

She doesn’t even have to speak to answer that. As if she’s going to stay away from her best friend since kindergarten.

Little does she know I can tap into her phone if and when I need to.

The fact her father went to these lengths after the emails I’ve seen are understandable. One described exactly what he’d do to her if she ever saw Dylan again. Why that mattered I don’t know, but this person is definitely obsessed to the point of paranoia.

There are also photos of Aspyn, sent via email, from her stalker.

Photos of her everywhere, unbeknown to her.

Shopping.

At restaurants.
