Her tone mocks me, but I don’t care. Anything to keep her talking, which is weird for me. Usually, I don’t like chicks who talk a lot.

“That’s where you’re wrong. We have a big club. Everyone is there to help if they’re needed. You see that truck behind us?”

She frowns, swiveling in her seat to look behind her. “Uh, yeah?”

“Didn’t even notice them, did you?”

She turns her gaze back to mine. “Should I? Who are they?”

“My guys. The prospects.”

“Oh. You said you ditched them.”

“Yeah, from my truck. Then I said they’re gonna be tailin’ us.”

“So…how many of them are back there?”

“Two.”

“Do they have guns, too?”

I snort. So she takes everything literally. Of course she does. “I’m not really packin’… Not on my body anyway.”

“You have a gun in the truck?”

“You ask a lot of questions.”

“Can you blame me?” she balks. “I have no idea what the hell is going on here. Just what little information my dad told me. And to be honest, I’m getting pretty sick of being kept out in the cold.”

There’s that temper again. She flares so quickly.

“What do you need to know?”

“Where we’re going for a start.”

I frown. Her dad never told her?

“The Platinum Apartments. It’s a new complex downtown in an elite neighborhood. Practically need a passport to get in the buildin’.”

This seems to settle her.

So her security is an issue. I wondered if she thought this was all a joke, but it’s clear that she’s worried, even if she tries her best to hide it.

“Okay, and then what?”

I blink. “What do you mean? That’s where you’ll be staying, and when you need to go out, I’ll be there to escort you.”

“All day?”

“Yes.”

“And night?”

Now it’s my turn to swallow hard. “Yes.”

“So you’ll be staying there, too?”

“For the most part.”
