“How did you find us?” I was out of it for most of the journey after Tara drugged me.

“It’s a long story. Just know that I’m sorry. I should’ve known sooner…”

I cup his face, shaking my head. “You don’t have to be sorry, Rock. None of this is your fault. I swear. I always knew Tara was controlling, but I thought it was coming from a place of concern and love, not…not this.” My nose wrinkles in disgust.

“I shot her,” Rock says as I gasp.

“What?”

“I had to. She pointed the gun at me when I riled her, and I took my chance. I didn’t want her to die because the real punishment is lettin’ her suffer, just like you’ve done thinkin’ she was your friend for such a long time when she was the enemy all along.”

I curl closer into his side. “I want to go home.”

He kisses the top of my head. “Where is home, Aspyn?”

“Wherever you are, Rock.”

He pulls back to look down at me. “I love you.”

My breathing hitches as I stare at him. “I love you, too.”

“I’m so sorry you got hurt.” I see the pain in his eyes, and it breaks my heart.

“I’m just sorry that it went on this long and she fooled us all.”

“It’s over now. It’s finally over.” I can’t help but feel joyful, even though I should feel remorse and sorrow.

“You’re gonna have some shitty days ahead,” he tells me as he holds me tight. “Some questions we may not even be able to answer. Who knows why she did any of it. In her mind, she was protectin’ you.”

“She wanted to kill me!”

He soothes me as I cradle once more into his shoulder. “I know. Which is why I’m never lettin’ you go ever again.”

I take a deep breath. “I want to tell my dad about us.”

Rock pulls back to look at me again. “You sure about that?”

I nod. “Yes. of course I’m sure. I wanted to make sure you loved me back. I mean, you're not just saying that because you almost died yesterday and I almost died today, right?”

He chuckles. “I think I loved you when I first rescued that suitcase from the conveyor belt. My heart skipped a beat when our eyes met.”

I run my hand over his face, my fingers brushing his beard. Suddenly, I need all of him.

Pressing my lips against his, he cups my face with both hands.

“Aspyn, not here.”

“Shhh! Near-death experience here, let me have this.”

I love the feel of his lips on mine.

But before we can fully kiss, someone clears their throat.

Turning my head, I see my dad is standing in the doorway. I gasp and Rock squeezes my hand even tighter. He doesn’t move off the bed and my dad eyes him warily.

“What the hell is going on?” he barks.

“Dad,” I say as he rushes to me, side-eyeing Rock as he pulls me into his arms. “My princess, are you alright? Are you hurt? The doctor said you hit your head, that Tara drugged you?”
