I huff out a laugh and rub her side. “I don’t care, and I haven’t given you permission to disagree, brat.” I switch up my tactics. “We get to see our penthouse. It's finally finished. Actually, its official opening was on your birthday, but I haven’t seen it yet. I wanted us to see it together. Come on.”

“Our penthouse? Like… ours?” She asks while rubbing the sleep from her eyes.

“Yes. I bought the air rights to the building right after my eighteenth birthday. It’s been a very long time, but I finally had them add two floors and fix everything. I’ve been able to turn it into what I’ve been dreaming of. Something that I think will leave you happy as well. I haven’t officially been moved in, but I’ve been there enough times while it was under construction to know my way around. The top floor is just for us. It’ll hold all our secrets.” I smile at her now that she is awake and staring at me, dumbfounded by this revelation.

“Well, what the fuck are we waiting for? Get your lazy ass out of bed, let’s go!” She yells as she jumps up, excited and full of adrenaline.

I snicker and pull myself out from under the comforter. My morning wood stands at attention, waiting to be greeted by Zolina. “Someone else wants to say good morning.”

Her cheeks turn pink as she smiles and gives it a shy wave. “Good morning, Grumpy Junior.”

I flex my cock, making it dance just for her. We both break our serious faces and start cracking up. I’m glad she’s finally starting to come around and perk up around me. “Come on, goofball. Let’s go, the car will be here soon. The snow has melted a little bit, and the main road was plowed last night. I heard the snowplow before I fell asleep.”

“What about clothes?”

“I already put your dress downstairs and packed my duffle bag.” I grab my gun from the nightstand drawer. “You can wear my sweats that you stole from me the other day, and I have a clean shirt waiting for you. I rather like it when you don’t have any clothes on, but we will have company, and I don’t want anyone to see your body except me.”

“Thank you.” She blushes as she walks to the closet.

“What are you doing? There is nothing in there that we need.”

“Except these,” she says, holding up the handcuffs from the wedding.

“Why did you save those?” I ask.

“I originally planned to handcuff you in your sleep and run, but… now, we can probably use them in other ways.” Zolina giggles and tosses them to me before we head out of the room and downstairs. She finds the clothes, and we both get dressed.

“Are you hungry, Pet? I can grab a yogurt or something for you.”

“Will you drug me like last time you gave me one?”

“Wait,” I halt what I’m doing. “You know that I drugged you? How perceptive of you. How?”

“It’s not the first time someone has. You said the car was waiting?”

“Yes.” I unlock the door and usher her through it. Once we are both out, I sling the duffle over my shoulder and pick her up bridal style. She doesn’t muffle her squeal of shock. “What? You don’t have shoes on.”

“I just expected to do, like… a piggyback or something. Not for you to pick me up like this,” she giggles, the noise music to my ears.

“I’ll carry you anywhere, Zolina. Now, let’s get through the remaining snow and go get in our carriage.”

Chapter 22

Atlis

Once we are in the car, my relaxed state of mind slowly slips away. The normal mask of indifference returns to my features. When we’re only about thirty minutes outside of Noir Sands, as we pass the last exit, my men box us in. I’m irritated that I have to be in the city and that I’ll have to leave Zolina alone to go deal with business. Just because she’s mine now doesn’t mean I can ignore my responsibilities. I wish we could have stayed in the chalet, but I have work to get done. We can't hide and pretend things are easy or that we are a normal couple. No.

We are mafia heirs. Business and murder are our lives.

“What happens now, Atlis? What does my role as your wife mean for me?”

“What do you want it to mean? What do you want to know? Or rather, not know?” I ask. I don't need to look at her to see the gears turning inside her head.

“I’m not sure. I've never been given that option. It's always been the blind way for me. No one has ever filled me in on the details. No one has ever asked me what I wanted.” Her voice drops to a barely audible whisper. “Not when it matters, anyway.”

I pull my attention away from the scenery and look at her. Her head is dropped as she plays with the drawstring of the sweats. I push her hair out of her face and tuck it behind her ear.

“I will never keep you in the dark on anything that I do. You won't need details, but I'll tell you if that's what you want.” She looks at me now, her eyes brimming with tears once more. The smile she gives me lights up her face. I meet her smile with one of my own. “You're my wife. We can make up our own rules for the relationship.”
