That’s Madeline for you.

We have joint custody because it looks good for her to say that. But she is always too busy to see our son—or so she says anyway.

Because somehow, she always finds plenty of time for her soon-to-be husband. I’m not jealous of the guy. Good riddance, I say. I just don’t like it when it’s my son that gets hurt because of her selfishness.

We step outside and there’s a coughing sound coming from my car.

“No, no, no, no...”

I race toward it, ripping the door open, and I kill the engine and pop the hood.

Smoke billows up.

I don’t have time for this, you stupid thing.

Connor stands on the sidewalk, his dark eyes wide. “Dad? Is everything okay?”

No, it’s not. Nothing is okay right now.

I take a deep breath because none of this is his fault.

“I don’t know, buddy.” I run my hands over my face, leaning over the hot engine. “What time does your mom want to meet you for dinner?”

“She said four-thirty.”

I glance at my watch. It’s already a quarter past four.

This isnotgood.

Wait a second…

I look at my son. “Did you... Did you skip your ball practice?”

Connor cringes. “I want to see Mom.”

I clench my teeth.

We can talk about this later.

Maddy and I are divorced for a reason. Unfortunately, my son can’t divorce her.

Sometimes, I wish he could because this is not healthy for him. He shouldn’t have to beg his mother for scraps of her attention.

So, I won’t be mad that he did this. Especially because I remember what it feels like, and I would’ve done the same thing when I was his age.

Ifmy mom wanted to see me.

I try focusing on the task at hand, but I’m in over my head. I have no idea what’s wrong with the car.

“Dad, wehaveto go,” Connor whines from behind me, tapping me on the shoulder. “Can’t we just get an Uber or something?”

“Can I give you a ride?” The sweet, light voice causes me to jerk my head upward, barely missing the top of the hood.

My eyes land on none other than Ms. Everett.

She’s got car keys in her hand, holding them up.

The black apron is gone, leaving her in a pair of tight black skinny jeans and a white blouse, everything fitted in just the right way, showing off a body that I could get lost in.
