“I’ll see you in a few minutes, then.” I hang up the phone, and quickly gather my things, shoving them into my bag.

Why does Maddie always use Connor like this? Couldn’t she have called me to ask if this was okay?

No, that would mean she cares. About either of us.

I sigh as I push through my office door and head down the empty hallway as most students are in class right now.

The other love I have, other than my son, is teaching, and though I don’t need the money, I love the fact that it challenges me and keeps my head busy.

And since I don’t exactly need the money, teaching is my way to give back.

I hurry to the staff parking lot.

The air has a winter feel to it, even if it’s still technically autumn. The weather here in the city can never make up its mind.

I don’t really mind that. Keeps me on my toes.

I open my SUV door and slide in.

After starting the engine, I back out of the parking spot. The check engine light kicks on, and I sigh.

For a luxury vehicle, this thing has been nothing but a pain since the day I bought it.

I can’t worry about this now, though. My son is waiting for me, so I drive to Bert’s. Since I have no idea what this light is, and I haven’t got time to look at the manual right now, I park right out front and leave it running.

There are almost no cars here, so it must be a slow day.

Besides, I just want to grab Connor, and we’ll be on our way.

I halfway expected Connor to be waiting outside for me, but my guess is that Bert wouldn’t let him. My friend knows I love my son, and he’s like an uncle to him too.

I get off, tugging my coat a little tighter around me.

The wind is a little sharper than I expected.

I hurry to the dark-cherry double doors and pull them open only to be frozen to the spot by a pair of familiar green eyes.

No way...

“Table for one?” a blonde asks from beside her.

“Uh...” My eyes are locked on Ms. Everett’s widened ones, her pink, pillowy lips slightly ajar.

She’s gorgeous. A very beautiful young woman. If I were ten years younger, or in my college days, I would’ve gone for it.

What the hell am I thinking? I’m not a horny college boy. I’m an adult. A Professor. And she’s not just any student. She’smystudent.

And apparently, she was telling the truth. She does have a job—at least.

“Sir? Are you dining here?” the blonde woman insists.

“Dad!” Connor shouts from behind the two women as I shake my head. “It took you forever to get here. Bert said I couldn’t wait outside because it wasn’t safe.”

“And he’s right. Now, let’s go.” I put my hand around his shoulders to guide him out, not giving either of the women a second look.

“I can’t wait to see Mom.” Connor’s smile lights up his whole face. “It’s been over a month.”

“Yeah,” I grunt.
