WAKING UP, I’M in the hospital. Not in a regular room or anything, but in the emergency department. Doc and Hawkeye are at my side. They’re talking in hushed voices as they discuss whatever is going on with me. Honestly, I don’t see why the hell I was brought to the hospital. But I’m glad I was because I want to make sure the baby is okay. That nothing happened while I was being held by those fucking twatwaffles. No, they didn’t hurt me anywhere near my abdomen, but I have no clue if anything was done when I was knocked out.

“Brax,” I murmur, my voice hoarse from the lack of water I’ve had since being taken.

While I might not have been held for a long time, I wasn’t given anything to eat or drink while I was there. Not that I would’ve accepted anything from the fucking psychos. They probably would have drugged me or something just because that’s the type of people they are. So, now I’m paying the price.

“Sweets. Thank fuck you’re awake,” Brax says, rushing to my side and resting his palm on the side of my face carefully.

“What’s going on?” I ask him, not sure what happened after I managed to get myself free from the chains holding me.

“We found you in the house. You were walkin’ toward the door when you collapsed. I caught you before you hit the floor. We brought you in to make sure you’re okay. That the baby is okay,” he tells me as Doc steps up to his side.

“I’m gonna have the technician come in with the ultrasound machine so you can get a good look at the baby. Make sure nothing is going on with him or her. Do you want Ricochet and Paige in here with you two?” Doc asks me as I look at Brax.

“Yes. They need to know their baby is okay. I don’t want them to worry or be stressed out about this. Please let them in for that,” I say, my voice still sounding like I gargled with gravel for a while. “Can I have a drink please? My throat is dry.”

“Of course. Now, the main injuries you have are to your wrists. I’ve had to put stitches in them to close some of the wounds. You did a real number on yourself, Tara. I’ve got you on antibiotics to prevent an infection taking hold. Your ankles weren’t as bad. I cleaned those wounds and bandaged them up. You’ll need to keep a close eye on both sets of wounds. The bruising and scratches on your face and neck are superficial. The skin is broken but no stitches were needed,” Doc informs me as Brax holds a glass of water with a straw out for me. He lets me take a few sips before pulling it back again.

“Don’t want you to make yourself sick, sweets. Gotta take it slow,” he says, a soft smile on his face despite the worry filling his eyes.

“I’ll get Ricochet and Paige in here before the technician comes in. You lay back and get some rest. How’s your head feeling? There is a bump on the back of your head, but it wasn’t cut open or anything. It will go away on its own. You might have a headache for a few days. You don’t have a concussion thankfully. I’m honestly not sure how you don’t have one with how you passed out. I’ll be back soon,” Doc says before leaving Brax and me alone in the room.

Brax sits down on the edge of my bed and presses his head against my shoulder. He can’t be comfortable with how tall he is, but I don’t say a word to him. I need his touch as much as he needs to be touching me right now. My eyes fill with tears as I finally let go of the fear that filled me when I was being held. The weight of something happening to the baby lifting off my shoulders. I take my first full breath since they broke into the trailer and hurt Marco before taking me.

“Where’s Marco? Is he okay?” I ask, needing to make sure the Prospect is okay after he tried so hard to defend me from being taken.

“He’s okay, sweets. A few of the guys are with him now. He’ll have to stay here for a few days. Lucifer really did a number on him. Pretty sure a knife was used to hurt him. I don’t know all the details, but what few I do know are scary as fuck. I lost my shit, Tara. When you didn’t answer your phone, I was goin’ out of my fuckin’ mind. For the first time, I went off on Venom in the middle of church because all I wanted to do was get on the road and find you. I didn’t give a fuck about Marco or anyone else. You were the only thing on my mind. You know I’d blow up the world for you, sweets. It almost fuckin’ happened,” he tells me, lifting his head so I can see the vulnerability he’s giving me right now.

“I knew you’d be there to get me, Brax. There was never a doubt in my mind. Other than being chained to a wall, and that bitch attacking me, they didn’t do anything. Lucifer got in my face about knowing more than I said I did. He was pressing for information on the club’s weakness. I kept telling him I didn’t know anything. Went after the mother by using the girls against her. Seems she has a slight soft spot for them every once in a while. But the things she said to me about them, I’ll never forget. I want to fucking hurt her so bad. Paige and Lyric are my friends. They don’t deserve to have a bitch like that for a mother,” I tell him, letting my tears slide down my face as a knock sounds on the door of the room I’m in.

“Come in,” Brax calls out, not moving from his spot at my side.

The door opens to reveal Ricochet and Paige. She’s got tears in her eyes as she looks at me on the bed. With a slight nod from me, she rushes in the room and doesn’t stop until she’s right at my bed.

“Are you okay? What did Doc say?” she questions, her voice almost frantic with the need to know what’s going on with me.

“I’m okay. A little sore. My wrists are killing me. She said she had to put stitches in them to close up some of the wounds I created. My head hurts from the blow that knocked me out too. Other than that, my face and neck hurt a little. I expect it won’t last too long. Those wounds are all pretty much superficial. Doc’s gonna bring in a technician so we can have an ultrasound done. Make sure everything is okay with the baby,” I tell her as Ricochet stands at the end of my bed like he’s guarding me.

“I’m so sorry this happened to you,” Paige says, the tears she’s been holding back finally spilling over.

Ricochet is immediately at her side and pulls her into his arms. He holds her close while looking down at me. For a minute the room is silent as the four of us just take in the fact that I’m okay. I’m here with them and not being held still by Lucifer and that bitch.

“Are you sure you’re okay? They don’t need to keep you or anythin’?” Ricochet finally asks me.

“I’m okay. Just a little sore, I promise,” I tell him, my voice is filled with emotion.

Before any of us can say anything, there’s another knock on the door and Doc opens it. She’s followed in the room with a technician pushing an ultrasound machine in front of her. Doc smiles at everyone before Ricochet and Paige move to the other side of the bed. They stand at the edge of the bed while Brax remains laying in it with me. He doesn’t move other than to lift the gown I’m wearing up over my stomach. I’ve got the smallest hint of a belly started now. Thankfully, they left my leggings on so I’m covered below the waist.

The technician places a towel over my pants and pulls the gown up just a little more so it’s out of her way. She turns on the screen of the machine and asks for my information while making sure it’s all correct. I tense my stomach muscles as she squirts the gel on my skin. It’s not as cold this time, but there’s still a definite chill to it. Looking to the side, I find Ricochet and Brax watching every move she makes. Paige is staring at the screen already.

“Okay. We’re gonna check the heartbeat first,” the technician says, her voice soft and gentle as if she knows how tense we all are right now.

Placing the wand on my stomach, she presses a few buttons and the room is filled with the sound of the baby’s heartbeat. It sounds steady and strong as more tears fill my eyes. Paige gasps as she records the sound with her phone. After pressing a few more buttons on the keyboard, the sound goes away.

“Are you all ready to see the baby?” the technician asks, looking between the four of us as she tries to figure out what’s going on and who the parents of the baby are.

I don’t really blame her. No one knows I’m a surrogate for Paige and Ricochet. I’m not gonna say anything to her because there’s no judgment in her eyes. Just mild curiosity about the situation we’re all in. It doesn’t help with the guys wearing their cuts. I know there’s all sorts of crazy as fuck rumors about the guys, the club, and all the sexual acts they get up to on a daily basis. Most of it isn’t true, it’s just the fantasies of bored housewives.

“Yes,” I finally say when no one speaks up.
